Leadership principles refer to the fundamental values that leaders must consider to develop value-based leadership. These principles are crucial in fostering awareness among employees about the organization’s norms, policies, principles, and culture. Individuals in organizational leadership positions leverage leadership principles to formulate strategies for smooth organizational operations. Those in leadership positions, such as CEOs, managers, trainers, and supervisors, constantly interact with followers, and it is incumbent upon them to learn these qualities to improve their leadership styles. Once leaders put these leadership principles into practice, they are likely to get the most out of everyone.

Authentic Leadership

Authentic leadership is one of the primary leadership principles that refers to being morally grounded, transparent, and responsive to people’s needs. From an intra-personal perspective, authentic leadership refers to paying attention to one’s self-knowledge, self-regulation, and self-concept (Northouse, 2021). On the other hand, from an interpersonal perspective, it is about building positive relationships with followers based on reciprocity.

As an aspiring coach, I will leverage authentic leadership to build positive relationships with athletes and encourage feedback sharing. Training athletes cannot be a one-way process. There is a need to consider athletes’ input, accept my mistakes, and forge a collective path ahead.

Teamwork

According to Northouse (2021), fostering teamwork is crucial to creating harmony in a team. Leaders can create a team spirit by averting competition among members by driving them toward a collective objective. Also, hierarchical structures where followers are expected to align with the leader’s instructions should be avoided.

Teamwork is a core component of sports success. I will work to ensure all members are aligned with a collective goal. As a coach, I will organize recreational get-togethers that will foster a harmonious atmosphere among athletes.

People Empowerment

People empowerment is a core component of leadership because it facilitates individuals to attain their individual goals. As a leader, one should create an environment that enables people to improve their capacities through training and development. After improving their capabilities through individual development, a successful leader empowers followers by granting them autonomy to complete tasks, thus bolstering their confidence.

As an aspiring football coach, I look forward to leveraging this crucial leadership principle to build leaders in the team. For instance, I will empower the team’s captain and members of the team to lead some training sessions. This will bolster their leadership skills and independence and improve their confidence.

Integrity

Integrity entails upholding a strong set of values that distinguish one as a moral leader. One of the values that sets leaders apart is accountability, one’s willingness to take responsibility for their actions (Northouse, 2021). Such leaders stand out because they can be trusted by others to keep their word.

As an aspiring coach, I look forward to upholding integrity by subjecting myself to the same standards I subject my team members. I will treat all team members equally regardless of their performance to make them feel safe. Also, I will speak out whenever something feels off, even if it feels uncomfortable.

Adaptability

Adaptability, a follower-oriented leadership principle, encompasses helping followers to cope with different circumstances. Successful leaders prepare followers to cope with uncertainty through empowerment (Latham, 2007). For instance, business leaders in a fast-changing technological environment should help followers upskill to stay relevant in the digital era.

I plan to leverage this leadership principle once I become a coach to improve my team. For instance, I will help team members cope with injuries, which are unavoidable in sports training. I will orient the team to persevere even in difficult circumstances.

Inclusivity

According to Northouse (2021), inclusivity as a leadership principle is about making everyone in the team feel recognized and important. Successful leaders accommodate everyone’s views regardless of their knowledge, gender, and influence. One way to practice inclusive leadership is by incorporating everyone’s views in decision-making.

Given the influence of inclusive leadership on team building, I will put more effort into ensuring every team member feels recognized once I begin my coaching career. This can be done by creating a feedback loop that enables every athlete to contribute to decision-making. Even if I am not in a position to accommodate someone’s input, I will appreciate their contribution to make them feel important.

Ethical Leadership

Ethical leadership encompasses the characteristics of a moral manager and a person. From the moral person facet, ethical leadership refers to a leader who shows honesty, respect, truthfulness, integrity, and openness to input (Ahmad et al., 2017). On the other hand, ethical leadership from a moral manager facet refers to how leaders leverage their leadership influence to encourage followers to align with ethical standards.

Ethics are particularly crucial in maintaining the integrity of sporting activities. Given the rise of match-fixing incidents, I will leverage my leadership position to encourage athletes to uphold sporting integrity. On the other hand, I will uphold respect, honesty, and truthfulness as I interact with team members as a way of upholding morality.

Goal-Orientation

A goal-oriented leader motivates their team toward achieving a collective goal. One way leaders may facilitate goal attainment is by offering followers rewards whenever they make positive steps toward achieving individual and collective goals (Steinmann, 2019). Also, successful leaders facilitate goal attainment by providing information, communicating expectations, and eliminating roadblocks that may hinder goal attainment.

Sports is a goal-oriented industry, as every team begins the season by setting objectives. I look forward to leveraging a reward system to encourage productivity among my team members. In collaboration with other levels of team management, I will set a fixed reward for anyone who scores a goal as a way of motivating the rest of the team to put in more effort.

Trustworthiness

Trustworthiness is a crucial leadership principle because it is the glue that binds leaders and their followers. A trustworthy leader garners credibility and is perceived as fair by followers, hence the likelihood of followers aligning with their directives (Legood et al., 2016). Another core element of trustworthiness is patience, which will help the leader stay put as they wait for their followers to learn gradually.

As a football manager, I will leverage trustworthiness to gain my team members’ confidence. Among others, I will ensure that anyone who is promised rewards receives them promptly. Besides, I will ensure reprimands are executed fairly across the board to foster harmony in the team.

Justice

Successful leaders should demonstrate justice, especially when dealing with conflicts. To ensure every team member feels included, a great leader should make everyone feel equal by avoiding the emergence of ingroups and outgroups (Northouse, 2021). Besides, whenever opportunities emerge, a great leader should distribute them equitably to ensure everyone feels included.

Justice is a crucial tenet in sports management. As a coach, I will ensure everyone feels that they are justly treated. In particular, navigating the subject of rewards is crucial, especially in a team whose members have varying capabilities. Even those who do not stand out must receive a fair share of rewards to prevent them from feeling alienated.

Conclusion

In summary, the 10 leadership principles go a long way to supporting organizational success. Leaders who uphold these principles gain credibility, making it possible for them to assert their leadership influence. Although some of the traits that influence these principles are inborn, leaders can improve their leadership effectiveness by learning.
