In case the contraceptive contains norethindrone and Ethinyl estradiol, St. John’s Wort will interact with the contraceptive and increase norethindrone and Ethinyl estradiol metabolism (Chrubasik-Hausmann et al., 2019). The out-of-site metabolism reduces the exposure dosage from the contraceptive, risking a pregnancy. St. John’s wort is also known to interact with Alprazolam sold as Xanax and reduces the drug’s potency.
