Post-TANIC Self-Assessment and Reflection Post

Post-TANIC Self-Assessment and Reflection Post

Nursing informatics has become a critical part of the healthcare delivery infrastructure. The application of informatics in healthcare delivery is improving the safety and quality of care while at the same reducing associated costs and delays in care delivery. Nursing informatics creates an opportunity for nurses to proactively reconceptualize their role within the healthcare system as the healthcare ecosystem is fast changing, and technology is becoming a great part of care delivery (Booth et al., 2021). However, to achieve this reconceptualization, nurses will need to have basic and in-depth competency in the use of computers and related digital technologies, as well as informatics. Developing competency in informatics is a gradual learning process. Learning about informatics in healthcare is essential in preparing nursing graduates to take up future roles as nursing informaticists and enable the implementation of nursing informatics in nursing practice and healthcare delivery.

Comparing Competency Level from Week 2 Self-Assessment to this Week’s Post-TANIC Self-Assessment

The repeated use of the Post-TANIC Self-Assessment has helped me identify my competencies in nursing informatics, appreciate the areas I need to develop, and track my progress in developing nursing informatics competencies. The previous Post-TANIC Self-Assessment I took changed my perception of my competency level in informatics and the use of technology in healthcare. In the previous Post-TANIC Self-Assessment, I realized that my knowledge of the basic use of computers, such as emailing and searching for information over the internet, was actually a part of the use of technology in nursing and applicable in the nursing informaticist role. However, in the previous Post-TANIC Self-Assessment, I realized that I had limited knowledge in the areas of actual use of nursing informatics systems such as electronic health records (EHRs) and other systems and how to keep them secure. During my previous Post-TANIC Self-Assessment, I did not know how to accurately enter, upload, and share data on patients and other health records into the EHRs and other related systems. The self-assessment also made me realize that I had limited knowledge of systems’ threats, safety, and security.

In this week’s Post-TANIC Self-Assessment, I noticed that my competency level has improved compared to the previous self-assessment. I have learned how to keep the systems secure by ensuring better internet hygiene. I have learned that simple mistakes that feel unimportant while using digital technologies are risk factors to the security of health information systems. Besides that, I can now navigate the system update and validate information available within the system and on the internet. One major weakness the current self-assessment has made me realize is that I still do not have the competencies to remove or identify viruses or cybersecurity threats. There is still more to learn and improve on my computer literacy and competency in informatics.

Competencies to My Future APN Role

Two nursing informatics competencies that I feel will be most beneficial to my future role as an APN are, understanding the basic skills for nursing informatics and cybersecurity skills. Since my future APN role will include using digital technologies and health information systems to improve care outcomes and support nursing and healthcare research, possessing basic informatics skills will be very important. Basic nursing informatics skills involve knowledge of how to work with electronic patient information and other decision-support systems. In this case, the basic skills include knowing how to navigate through the system efficiently, create, save, update, upload, validate, share, delete, search, export, and import patient data, information, and files, as well as analyze and present data in a more meaningful format.

Moreover, cybersecurity skills are important in my future APN role as they will enable me to maintain the safety, security, and confidentiality of the health information systems and the information held in these systems. Healthcare organizations hold very sensitive personal information on patients, such as their health status. Due to this, healthcare organizations have, in recent years, become common targets for cybercrimes. Healthcare cyber-attacks are costly and result in a loss of trust and confidence in the organization and potential patient harm (Middaugh, 2021). Nursing informaticists have a role in ensuring the safety and security of health organizations’ information infrastructure and managing the health data and information to support care delivery (Alexander et al., 2019). As such, I want to develop my technical knowledge in cybersecurity and understand troubleshooting information systems to improve the efficiency of the health information systems for my organization.

Two Competencies I Achieved in this Course

This course has taught me a lot about informatics and the application of informatics technologies in patient care and the delivery of care services. I have achieved two top competencies throughout this course: basic informatics and computer literacy skills and logical thinking and decision-making. Basic computer and informatics literacy is critical to be able to efficiently use computers and informatics technologies to improve patient care and support the healthcare delivery systems. These skills are essential in the normalization of the use of informatics technologies in future nursing roles and healthcare (Booth et al., 2021). Similarly, the logical thinking and decision-making competencies I have achieved are essential in the day use of informatics in nursing. Logical thinking supports decision-making during patient care, which is essential to the development of evidence-based practice in nursing (Nordick, 2020). Subsequently, logical thinking and decision-making competency will support my ability to use information systems to develop and analyze big data for unbiased evidence essential for EBP.

Week 7: Post TANIC Self-Assessment and Reflection Post
22 unread replies.22 replies.

Purpose

The self-assessment is completed using the TIGER-based Assessment of Nursing Informatics Competencies (TANIC) tool. TIGER refers to the Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform Initiative, which identified a list of the minimum informatics competencies for all nurses and students graduating from pre- and post-licensure programs. The graded self-evaluation of your informatics competencies is required in order to increase your own understanding of competencies in nursing informatics, which will enable the planning of strategies to enhance knowledge and skills.

Scholarly Sources: Only scholarly sources are acceptable for citation and reference in this course. These include peer-reviewed publications, government reports, or sources written by a professional or scholar in the field. The textbooks and lessons are NOT considered to be outside scholarly sources. For the threaded discussions and reflection posts, reputable internet sources such as websites by government agencies (URL ends in .gov) and respected organizations (often ends in .org) can be counted as scholarly sources. The best outside scholarly source to use is a peer-reviewed nursing journal. You are encouraged to use the Chamberlain library and search one of the available databases for a peer-reviewed journal article. The following sources should not be used: Wikipedia, Wikis, or blogs. These websites are not considered scholarly as anyone can add to these. Please be aware that .com websites can vary in scholarship and quality. For example, the American Heart Association is a .com site with scholarship and quality. It is the responsibility of the student to determine the scholarship and quality of any .com site. Ask your instructor before using any site if you are unsure. Points will be deducted from the rubric if the site does not demonstrate scholarship or quality. Current outside scholarly sources must be published with the last 5 years. Instructor permission must be obtained BEFORE the assignment is due if using a source that is older than 5 years.

Reflect and respond to EACH of the following questions.

Regarding the Post-TANIC Self-Assessment for this week, how does your competency level compare to the Week 2 Self-Assessment?
Which two competencies do you think may benefit you in your future role as an APN and why?
As discussed in the lesson this week, healthcare providers must be competent in informatics in order to make ethical decisions about informatics technologies and patients’ intimate healthcare data and information. To the extent that information technology is reshaping healthcare practices or promises to improve patient care, healthcare professionals must possess certain competencies which will assist with consistency and quality. Which two competencies did you achieve in this course? Explain.
