Political Behavior

Political Behavior

Political behaviour is described as a way in which people feel, think, and act in regard to politics, power, or any authority in general (“Home – Dr. Jaime Settle,” 2022). It is a result of political culture in that political culture deals with the typical way of peoples’ lives, an example being how corruption has grown to be a political culture in Africa for many years. It is natural when people try to get more power to gain something through influence, and the more power one has or attains, the more likely it is to increase the number of people who comply with one’s wishes (Johnson, n.d.).

Political socialization affects political behaviour since it is the process by which people develop attitudes, beliefs, opinions, and behaviours favourable to becoming good citizens (“Publishing Services,” 2022). Parents, family, media, and teachers mostly influence these developments. For instance, strictly voting for Christians only affects children’s beliefs. Political behaviour can also be expressed through different methods other than voting, one of which is protests. Citizens can hold protests after feeling a political act is either wrong or affects them negatively. For instance, when police harm people of colour without sufficient reason or evidence, the citizens who find it offensive will proceed to protest until justice is served.

I feel like political behaviour affects us in both positive and negative ways. It is not right that some leaders can abuse their power to get something for the wrong reasons. It is also wrong when people stick to influences passed to them by close people. An example is how some people avoided voting for coloured leaders in the West. However, some protests have been of great help, for instance, the worldwide protest after George Floyd’s death, which hugely impacted the world. In conclusion, political behaviour can be harmful, but when used in the right way can lead to significant changes around the world, such as an end to corruption, racism, and several others.
