Planning
How can the planning process help FedEx meet the company’s goal of meeting on-time delivery promises?
Planning is a critical step toward achieving goals within a company. FedEx currently encounters a challenge with the timely delivery of packages. The lack of sufficient employees to handle these deliveries has led to multiple disappointments among its clients due to the disruption of holiday celebrations. Clearly, the past planning processes have not sufficiently solved the problem that FedEx continues to face (Robbins and Coulter 2018). Thus, it is recommended that FedEx plan the process more elaborately. This means that the company should start planning to avoid extensive expansions. The implementation of the different changes over a longer period.
How could planning help overcome unexpected challenges such as these in the future?
FedEx noted that inclement weather and last-minute online sales surges affected the company’s ability to deliver packages by Christmas. The company is aware that the Christmas holidays invite last-minute purchases, which affects their ability to make timely deliveries (Robbins and Coulter 2018). To overcome this challenge, FedEx should hire permanent employees in different phases over a long period. For instance, the company should hire 15,000 employees each year’s first quarter. This approach allows the company to expand the company’s workforce by 45,000. During the holiday season, the company should hire about 20,000 casual employees. The gradual expansion allows FedEx to allocate resources more responsibly. Besides, the company should increase the prices of its services to ensure that the resources are sufficient to cover the expansion costs. In addition, this price increment will facilitate FedEx’s ability to meet the needs of its clients.
Would it be valuable for FedEx to gather competitor intelligence? Why or why not?
Every company needs to remain aware of the market’s activities. FedEx needs to find out the strategies its competitors use to make timely deliveries. This information allows the company to establish the existent gaps responsible for unsatisfactory services. The company’s ability to tailor strategies that satisfy the gaps will determine its rate of success in meeting all its clients’ needs.
