Electricity, light, and magnetism is another useful concept in our everyday lives. Early scientists such as James Clerk Maxwell are known for their contributions to these concepts and their applicability in modern physics. Mandy travels to Rome, and while landing inside the terminal, she realizes that her phone has been discharged. She used the universal USB that provided 5 volts in the country that the person was in, and her phone indicated that it was charging. The fact that his phone was charging fast was an indication that the USB port had high amperage. Mandy’s scenario offers a basis for exploring the innovations in physical science while discussing how James Clerk Maxwell’s concepts apply to our daily lives.

James Clerk Maxwell is considered one of the fore-founders of modern physics and a great 19th-century scientist. His contributions to physics, engineering, astronomy, and mathematics are phenomenal. Particularly, he is recognized for his contribution to making a connection between light and electromagnetic waves. From the scenario explained, Maxwell’s concept is applied in charging the phone using the USB cable. An electric field created allows the transfer of electrons to her phone, which in turn charges the phone using voltage (Davidson, 2015). Several examples of modern technology have been developed under Maxwell’s basic concepts. These include radios, televisions, telephones, and radar. Although Maxwell incorporated existing discoveries in his work, he made a substantial connection between light, magnetism, and electricity. The inventions by Hans Christian Oersted on how a current moving through a wire created a magnetic field and Michael Faraday’s concept of changing the magnetic field to create a current are among the major discoveries Maxwell included in his work.

The scientist formulated mathematical equations to connect these concepts to form a more complex technology. The combined outcome is referred to as electromagnetism and describes how magnetic fields are created and the interaction with other fields and objects. The combination of the discoveries brought about the logic that non-visible rays, such as electric current through the USB, do not necessarily need a medium, and the connection charges the cellphone (Davidson, 2015). Electromagnetic waves and electromagnetism are also applied in the medical field, whereby ultrasound scanners and X-rays use sound and light wave technology to produce images useful for medical processes.

In our daily lives, every mobile phone user experiences electromagnetism while charging their cellphones. This is in accordance with Maxwell’s theory on the transfer of electrons through a medium. The chargers we use facilitate the movement of electrons, which charge the device. Secondly, listening to the radio and watching the television, which we do almost all the time, applies some of Maxwell’s theories. The waves that are used in these instruments are electromagnetic waves transported in different forms, such as Electromagnetic Field (EMF) for radio waves. The radio waves are conveyed in the form of oscillating electric and magnetic waves at a certain frequency (L’Annunziata, 2016). Basically, a cellphone uses two-way wave transmission to a receiver to facilitate conversation between conversing parties.
