Why did Gandhi have to say, “It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver?” Gandhi had seen so many die because they could not afford treatment. I witnessed someone stay in hospitals for months because they could not pay the bill and had no insurance. Several people die just because we do not have free health insurance. They desire to be healthy but cannot get the opportunity. Yanussgevsky (2021) states that more than 45,000 Americans die annually of chronic and non-chronic illnesses for lack of health inductance. Up to 27.8 million Americans stayed an entire year without health insurance coverage. Therefore, health insurance is expensive. Not everyone can afford it, and sickness is unpredictable. It should be made free as it risks the lives of many people.
Health insurance is too costly. Not everyone can afford health insurance. In the U.S., health care is damn expensive, Americans pay much more for healthcare than in any other country, but still, there is no free health insurance. America as a nation spends 2.8 trillion dollars in health care annually. This is one-sixth of the entire economy, more than 8500 dollars per person, and considerably more than any other country (Keisler-Starkey, Katherine, and Lisa 14). Yet, health insurance is not free and accessible to everyone. Sadly, the available health insurance is expensive. The cheapest monthly health insurance plan is $456 for an individual and $ 1152 for a family (Yanushevsky 37). This is too expensive that citizens living below the minimum wage can never afford it. They will stay without insurance and eventually die or not seek proper medication when needed. Too sad.
Apart from being expensive, health insurance does not provide comprehensive coverage. Disappointingly, health insurance plans under non-permanent employment do not fully cover all illnesses, particularly chronic ones causing several deaths. For example, even if health insurance plans differ, most commonly exclude services and limited coverage for chronic diseases like experimental cancer therapies and long-term care. Yet these are the most expensive and alarming sicknesses that health insurance should cover. In addition, the health insurance plan only covers some costs, some drugs, not all. People have to spend out of their pockets, even with insurance. This has led to more than 1.7 million deaths in America yearly from chronic illnesses like cancer (Raghupathi, Wullianallur, and Viju 56). Sadly, with or without health insurance, people must spend the out-of-pocket maximum set by insurance plans that a person or family must pay before the health insurance can provide full coverage. This has risked several lives. Therefore, what is the solution?
The only solution to this menace is to make health insurance free. Yanushevsky (2021) says these healthcare insurance are costly and unaffordable to ordinary citizens endangering their lives and causing premature deaths (p.20). The government should consider making health insurance free because health is the backbone of the economy. With a considerably unhealthy population, the U.S. economy will decline. Let health insurance be free and save the lives of citizens. Just as statistics and facts show, the U.S. spends so much o health care than any other country. Thus, it should implement free health insurance. This will help reduce the country’s expenditure on health by 1.8 trillion dollars in ten years (Keisler-Starkey, Katherine, and Lisa 58). Let people’s health be the number one priority.
Evidently, health insurance should be made free; I discussed the two primary reasons why it should be made free. They are too costly and never offer comprehensive coverage. Then I gave the only solution to make health insurance free. Health insurance is expensive, not everyone can afford it, and sickness is unpredictable. It should be made free as they risk our lives. If the government truly minds its citizens and their lives, health insurance should be free because health is our only real wealth. An unhealthy populace means a ruined economy.
