Personal Statement

Personal Statement

In my life pursuit of life promotion and preservation, I have developed a keen interest in epidemiology. Epidemiology is a branch of public health focused on studying the determinants of and the distribution of health-related events or states. Epidemiology gives insight into health areas that should be prioritized to guarantee community health and wellness. As an aspiring epidemiologist, I believe I am better placed to study disease patterns across populations to inform disease areas that require intervention. In the modern healthcare landscape, where public health threats are apparent, my knowledge in epidemiology can be leveraged to inform priority areas in public health response.

My decision to pursue epidemiology was informed, in part, by my personal and professional experiences. To begin with, my experiences with infectious diseases skewed my career goals toward public health. At the height of the COVID pandemic, I witnessed close friends and relatives suffer considerably from the disease. Many verbalized a lack of knowledge of the disease pattern and wished to have known more aspects of the disease for their self-preservation. Subsequently, I have made it a life goal to contribute toward efforts targeting to curtail the spread of infectious diseases. I believe a master’s in epidemiology places me in a better position to inform the patterns of emerging infectious diseases.

My long-standing profession in healthcare also tailored my interests toward epidemiology. From serving as a volunteer at Desert Valley Hospital to my internship in microbiology, I have gathered insights into disease management and the role of caregivers in health preservation. Throughout my helping career, I have learned of the significance of disease prevention and how understanding disease patterns mitigates some illnesses. I am also conversant with the clinical settings, including how diseases spread, the role of healthcare providers in the spread of diseases, and how various public health parameters can be leveraged to prevent disease and preserve the lives of caregivers and their patients. I believe that by pursuing a master’s in epidemiology, I will be better placed to inform the patterns of disease spread across care settings and the community, enabling health preservation efforts to be implemented.

My career goal is to enable health promotion and preservation by equipping communities with knowledge of the determinants of health. My career goals are aligned with public health and the pursuit of a master’s degree in public health. The overarching goal of public health is to promote the health of individuals and communities. Likewise, advancement in public health often aims to expand public health officers’ capacity for life preservation. The congruence in purpose between my career goal, the pursuit of an MPH, and public health eases my academic journey toward achieving the MPH degree. This way, I will be better positioned to contribute towards health preservation.

I have excellent analytical, leadership, communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. I am also results and time-oriented. These skills position me to execute my mandates in public health. They will enable me to collaborate with other public health officers, health groups, and care organizations to study the disease patterns of various illnesses and inform their health risks. This makes me the right candidate for the program.
