Personal Statement – Lack of parental involvement

Personal Statement – Lack of parental involvement

My natural capability to link with children, love of learning quality, success priority, and work experiences make me believe that I can effectively be a leader in education. I am also keen to further my education and improve my knowledge and understanding of child development, education, care, and their parent’s involvement in children’s education; thus, my interest in the Doctorate in education in early childhood. The education course is critical as it allows me to use my curiosity and improve my skills. In my past workplace, I worked with children from birth to seven years, assisting in developing and learning new skills. Then, I was highly engaged in supervising and planning activities, and it was interesting to observe and note the range of skills in children of the same ages, from the use of cutlery to potty training. Assisting kids to develop their tactile, self-sufficiency, and communication skills was highly rewarding. I could see improvements and utilize new skills daily. As a result, my teamwork and communication skills rapidly developed because I was able to communicate with children, interested babies, parents, and co-workers. In my current context of professional practice, one significant problem of practice is the lack of parental involvement. For example, one of my best students in the class began deteriorating in his studies; he was always sad and not concentrating and showed signs of seizures. I realized this and wrote a letter to his parent. Surprisingly, his mother never bothered to come to school until the child worsened. This was unfortunate because the child was later diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). That is when her mother realized something was wrong, and it was already too late.

The problem of lack of parental involvement in learners’ education is a significant issue because parents tend to forget their children and solely leave everything about them for teachers to handle. Parents also need to learn the importance of involvement in their learners’ education because of ignorance and the assumption that teachers are responsible for everything about their children. Parents are never concerned about their children’s education. As such, they do not know nor understand the developmental, emotional, and social challenges that their children experience.

The underlying cause of the lack of parental involvement in early childhood education is a lack of awareness. Parents need to be fully informed about the essence of active involvement in their children’s education. Teachers should be responsible for creating awareness of the essence of being involved in learners’ education. The second issue is time restraints. Parents have busy work schedules and need more clarification about their children’s education. They leave all the responsibility to the teachers. Another issue is parents need to show interest in their children’s work or education. Parents need to allow their children to assist or observe them do homework. Additionally, parents making time for their children and helping them with homework motivates children and generally makes them feel loved and cared for, resulting in positive results.

This problem aligns with my area of specialization because I deal with, research, and study issues of early childhood learners. Many gaps and challenges experienced by early childhood institutions and teachers are caused by a lack of parental involvement in learners’ education. Secondly, I look forward to studying early childhood development and psychology, which generally impact young learners’ progress and learning outcomes. Therefore, this problem aligns with my area of specialization because it aligns with concepts I wish to research so that I can positively advocate for parental participation and involvement in learners’ education, as it is vital for their success.
