Personal Reflections on Survey Participation- Experiences and Insights

I have participated in various surveys. One time, I even designed a survey myself that aimed to find the level of satisfaction in marriages among Christians in our local Church. I had a great experience with most of the surveys I participated in. However, there were many questions, and I just got tired along the way and discontinued my participation. I believe this is one of the major weaknesses of using the survey method. In addition, I was majorly influenced to answer things that sounded ideal to me, or that would be pleasing to the researcher. According to Mauldin (2020), survey research is likely to be biased since participants might give answers that seem desirable to the interviewer. In some of the jobs that I have applied for, whenever a survey on how the interview experience was sent to me, I would give answers that I thought would be pleasing to the interviewers, which meant that they would obtain biased results. Ponto (2015) claims there is a need to use techniques to reduce such biases.

In my experience of participating in a survey, I discovered that surveys are generally easy ways of conducting one’s research. In the survey I helped design at Church, I learned how easy it is to get information from individuals through this method. On the other hand, I also learned that there is so much that a researcher might not learn from the surveys. If one seeks explanations for certain concepts, survey methods might not provide the required explanations as they are quite shallow. When designed in a way that does not maintain the participant’s interest, one might also obtain meager response rates.
