Personal Psalm writing
O, Lord, for everything that exists, both living and non-living, as far as it stretches across the billions of stars, It is all a proclamation of Your boundless power.
The unknown depths of the ocean, the nature of water and every creature, the roar of thunder, and the way mountains stand firmly on the ground are all testaments to Your power.
By watching the rising and setting of the sun, the seasons change. I stand a witness to your strength
Your voice of victory is heard in the whistling of the winds as they sweep across the planet.
Just like every living being bows to Your will, rivers flow where You direct them, and trees grow everywhere else but in the deserts, all as per Your will,
My anxiety and doubts are eliminated at the sound of Your name
In empty space, you hold galaxies in place (Summers and Trefil, 2017), a testament to your mighty
In the same way, You hold me firm when I face trouble
In hopelessness and despair, Your presence gave me comfort and reassurance
When my mind is filled with doubt and worry, You assure me of Your Goodness
When my heart was scared and afraid, You were my shield
I face many battles in life, but You have sustained me always.
O Lord my God, like the firm mountains you created, you are my unshakable foundation
I know that I will face many storms in life, but grant me strength to stay strong and overcome each one
This far I have come has been Your grace; thus, I trust in You, for You never fail me
With You, I will always find it in me to overcome.

Question
Getting Started
The Psalms can express a wide range of emotions, from joy to sorrow, hope to despair. They can be used to praise God, to lament our sins, and to seek his help. They are a powerful tool for spiritual growth. They can help us to connect with God, to express our faith, and find comfort and encouragement in times of difficulty.
Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:
- Synthesize your understanding of Psalms by creating your own original psalm.
- Incorporate the themes, literary devices, and styles learned from studying the Psalms into your own composition.
- Evaluate your own work, considering the effective use of language, imagery, and emotional expression.
Instructions
- Read Psalm 19. This psalm is a beautiful and poetic meditation on the glory of God and the beauty of creation. It is also a useful example of how to write a psalm in the style of the Bible.
- Choose a topic to write about. This could be anything that you are passionate about, such as the beauty of nature, the love of God, or the hope of salvation. See below for more ideas.
- Write in a poetic style. Use imagery and metaphor to create a vivid picture of your topic.
- Use simple language that is easy to understand. Psalms are meant to be sung and prayed, so they should be written in a way that is easy to remember and repeat.
- End with a prayer or a declaration of faith. This is a good way to bring your psalm to a close and to express your thoughts and feelings about your topic.
- Psalm 19 is 278 words. Keep your Psalm between 275 and 300 words.
- Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
- Submit your Psalm in the discussion forum by the end of the workshop.
- You may read others and respond if you want, but no response is necessary.
