Personal Core Competencies
One of my core competencies is good negotiation skills. I intend to leverage this competency in my professional future to secure a job and support my organization’s growth by representing the organization in negotiations about partnerships and strategic alliances. I will also leverage my competency in my future profession to negotiate better salaries and benefits with my employer. Negotiation skills are also essential in strategic management. According to Hitt et al. (2014), strategic management is a set of actions, decisions, and commitments that organizations make to earn returns that are above average and achieve strategic competitiveness. Therefore, I can leverage negotiation skills to help my organization increase its returns by negotiating with suppliers to reduce the cost of raw materials. I will also leverage my negotiation skills to get a promotion in my workplace and gain exposure to career growth opportunities.
Negotiation skills and competency are sustainable because organizations constantly negotiate to achieve growth and sustainability. However, I need to invest in diversity management competency. Globalization has increased diversity in the business environment (Raju, 2017). Therefore, I need diversity management competency to negotiate with people from diverse backgrounds. I also need to develop and invest in diversity management competency to become an effective leader in a multinational company. Although others do not need to be able to identify the negotiation competency for it to be valuable, I need to demonstrate it in the professional setting to increase my value as a leader because negotiations are essential in achieving effective leadership. For example, leaders need negotiation skills in change management to reduce resistance to change by establishing a mutual agreement with those affected by the change.
