Performance-Driven Teams and Understanding the Role of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation

Performance-Driven Teams and Understanding the Role of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation

Describe the Characteristics of Performance-Driven Team

A performance-driven team must display specific characteristics. First, the team must have clear goals that tie to the team and organizational goals. Thus, before a team embarks on its tasks, it has to set the goals it aims to achieve, which should reflect the overall organization’s goals. Secondly, a performance-driven team must have defined roles and responsibilities for each team member (Legault, 2016). For a team to work effectively, each member must play a specific role; therefore, defining and assigning roles for the members early enough before starting the work would help the team accomplish its tasks well.

Thirdly, it needs to have effective communication to keep the members updated with everything for a team to be performance-driven. Effective communication helps the team members to move together with the rest of the team members (Cherry, 2020). Moreover, a performance-driven team should be able to manage work deadlines based on work priorities. Members should work collaboratively to ensure every task is completed within the required timelines.

Describe the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and explain why it is important in understanding the types of motivation when it comes to team performance

Intrinsic motivation is a type of motivation that comes within, in that an individual is motivated by the work he is doing. When someone enjoys his work and wants to do the same work many times without getting bored, it is said that such a person is intrinsically motivated. Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, is a motivation that comes with an external factor. Individuals who perform certain tasks to get a reward are said to be extrinsically motivated (Legault, 2016). For example, employees work hard because they know that they will be paid thereafter. Hence, salary or wages are irrelevant factors that motivate them.

Team leaders must understand the types of motivation since knowing these types of motivations would help them know how they can motivate the team nm members to perform (Cherry, 2020). To achieve high performance, the team leaders need to prioritize intrinsic motivation, which is an individual self-drive to perform, rather than external motivation in order for the members to perform.
