Peer Response – Travel Nurse

Responding to Lane

Hello Lane,

This is an interesting post. In particular, one thing that piqued my interest in your post is your being a travel nurse. Indeed, this proves that nursing is a career with many paths an individual can explore, as Walker (2018) noted in one of her articles on the nurse.org website. Even though moving across states requires a registered nurse to acquire a license from each state they visit and practice in, being a traveling nurse has multiple benefits, such as exposure to many professional networking opportunities, experiencing different and unique professional experiences, practicing in different facilities and exploring various environments, which is an interesting lifestyle (Monteiro, 2023).

Further, I liked how you resonated with Walden University’s goals as well as Walden’s College of Nursing’s vision and mission statements. Inarguably, the University values flexibility and respects and encourages work-life balance by offering flexible schedules (Walden University, n.d.-a). In addition, Walden University’s value of putting its students first and responding to their needs resonates with your career as a travel nurse. Also, its mission to help students understand and develop scholarly writing skills that can be leveraged in civic, academic, and global engagement aligns with any student’s goal of becoming a successful scholar-practitioner. Further, besides Walden’s College of Nursing’s stating its vision and mission to create opportunities for students to reach their full potential, as you have noted, the College of Nursing also values academic quality and integrity, which are essential in becoming a successful scholar-practitioner (Walden University, n.d.-b).

Finally, your discussion about networking is very informative. Besides its significance in succeeding in healthcare, networking is also a path that leads to new opportunities, supports personal growth, and promotes policy activism, collaborative research, and evidence-based practice (Goolsby & Knestrick, 2017). It is worth noting that through all these opportunities, networking benefits not only nurses but also other stakeholders like the patients served by these nurses.

Peer Response – Travel Nurse

Hi, I am Lane, a 26-year-old registered nurse who was born and raised on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. In 2019, I received my associate degree in nursing, and my bachelor’s in the spring semester of 2023. From an adolescent, I have known that my calling and purpose in life was healthcare. I am currently a travel nurse, and I have combined my passion with leisure. Traveling is my love language, a form of self-care, and happiness. Since I can remember, my life has been centered around school and work, up until now. I am currently 18 weeks pregnant with my first child, a girl, whom I am super excited about. Education is an essential tool that I desire to instill in my child’s life. Walden University was my school of choice due to the flexibility and dedication to nursing education provided by the University. My ultimate goal is to be a successful, knowledgeable clinician practitioner. Following the master’s program, being able to “integratively assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate cost-effective healthcare strategies that reduce health disparities by patient/population advocacy for access to specialist nursing care,” is a learning objective that captured my attention (Walden University, n.d). Walden’s and the College of Nursing’s mission and vision statement aligns with my academic and professional goals by creating opportunities to reach my full potential as a scholar-practitioner. Walden was the finest school of choice considering the university’s goals and outcomes.

In recent years, social networking sites (SNSs) have evolved beyond connection and networking to become a powerful instructional tool (Dash et al., 2022). Networking is essential to being successful in healthcare. I have always been informed that networking can get a person through doors and opportunities that some degrees can not. Developing professional relationships, attending professional conferences, and utilizing professional networking websites all serve to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information that are vital to keeping a nurse’s knowledge fresh and relevant (Schmidt, n.d). As a student, I am interested in establishing new relationships and networking with other fellow students and current practitioners. Networking also assists in building confidence, gathering new information, and providing a different perspective.
