Employees at Garden Depot are facing job-related conflicts. Some staff members are concerned about their colleagues’ underperformance, while others are concerned about the subpar management provided by team leaders. First, Sampson realizes that Bowman performs multiple tasks, labeling himself an office manager. Bowman plays a role in computer systems, logistics, and inventory management, among other tasks. On the other hand, King feels that Sampson should get involved in managing landscaping and maintenance divisions. However, Sampson enjoys working in the retail section. The staff members are disgruntled about each other’s roles and performance, and this takes a toll on their productivity.

One of the issues that could be improved is the facilitation of open communication within the organization. Overcommunication clears uncertainties, especially during times of change. Also, managers should listen to their subordinates’ grievances. Besides, employee monitoring will be valuable, especially for employees who need help with change management.

Defining, Measuring, Analyzing, Improving, and Controlling the Conflict

DMAIC may be applied to the conflict at the Garden Depot. The first step is defining the source of the conflict in the organization, and this could be overlapping roles or uncertainty in employee roles (Mitchell & Gamlem, 2015). Subsequently, the desired outcome will be defined. Next is to measure or quantify the problem. Using other employees’ feedback, one can determine how the problem affects performance and subsequently come up with the right key performance indicators to measure solutions (Carroll, 2013). For instance, increased employee productivity and positive feedback could indicate that the solutions worked.

After measuring the problems, the next step is to analyze the problem to realize the root causes of the problem. Skills mismatch is among the possible causes of the ongoing problems in the organization (Mitchell & Gamlem, 2015). After discovering the root causes of the problems, the next step is to come up with strategies for improvement. Opening communication channels throughout all organizational levels will encourage employees to seek clarifications and offer valuable feedback (Mitchell & Gamlem, 2015). Finally, establishing control mechanisms to ensure solutions are working is crucial.

What Else to Consider When Using DMAIC

One should consider stakeholder involvement and communication while applying the DMAIC model to organizational problems. For instance, in the case of Garden Depot, employees will provide crucial feedback about their colleagues’ performance and express where they feel they can work best. Also, data analysis is crucial in quantifying problems as part of the DMAIC process (Carroll, 2013. To that end, there will be a need to acquire new data analysis software to facilitate the process.

Implementing DMAIC

According to Carroll (2013), listening to the customer’s voice is crucial while implementing the DMAIC model. For instance, engine technicians in a vehicle repair organization view the maintenance process as one that starts when an engine arrives at the company’s premises and lasts until it is assessed as ready to hit the road. However, for the transport company customer, the process ends once the engine is reinstalled and tested. If technicians delay the reinstallation process, the customer will be disgruntled. Therefore, implementing DMAIC requires a manager to incorporate customers’ perspectives as much as employee feedback is considered.
