Organizational Behavior

Organizational Behavior

Introduction

Organizational behavior is how people within an organization interact. The main elements of organizational behavior are structure, people, the external environment, and technology. Understanding the interaction between these elements can guide an organization on the changes that should be made to improve performance. Organizations also need to identify the elements that can be controlled, such as structure or the people hired to carry out functions within the organization to respond to the changes and other factors in the business environment. This paper reviews organizational behavior principles by discussing the relationship between an organization’s plans and culture and the main concepts of organizational behavior based on the case study on the modern-day workforce.

Explain how an organization’s future plans impact the organizational culture.

According to Collins (2021), organizational culture is an organization’s tangible personality and characteristics. The success of an organization is influenced by its culture, which could include a person-oriented culture or an innovative culture. Organizations that apply strategic management in making their long-term and short-term plans must have a culture that balances employees’ behavioral expectations, promotes individual accountability and nonconfrontation, and encourages experimentation. An organization that plans to use automation to reduce its workforce may adopt an innovative culture to prepare existing staff for automation. Organizations may also adopt a risk acceptance culture if they plan to expand their business operations in a business environment that exposes them to many risks. Risk acceptance is also aligned with an innovative culture (Abuzarqa, 2019). Organizations may adopt an innovative culture to define thinking patterns and describe behavioral attributes. Therefore, the organization may promote respect, integrity, adaptability, and trust to encourage collaboration among employees to exchange and implement creative ideas. These values can guide the organization’s quality planning, strategic objectives, and authentic communication approaches.

An organization that plans on enhancing employee performance and productivity may focus on meeting employees’ specific needs and expectations at all organizational levels. An organization may also emphasize employee training and development and use the newly acquired competencies, skills, and knowledge to build and improve performance. Developing an internal learning environment requires the support of a well-defined continuous development viewpoint and provides easier access to the diversity of personalized interactions, development experiences, and flexibility in applying new knowledge (Reid et al., 2021). The organization must encourage employees to master on-the-job skills at the team and individual levels. An organization that plans to continuously develop commitment must embrace digital technologies, artificial intelligence, robotics, and a culture of developing new skills.

Discuss how organizational behavior concepts apply in the case study.

The main organizational behavior concepts that apply in the case study are the whole person in the organization, employee empowerment, and mutuality of interest. The whole person concept in an organization focuses on employees’ intelligence and skills and their personal lives. It suggests that managers cannot isolate employees’ personal lives and work lives. In the case study, the whole person in an organization applies to the automation of tasks completed by employees because it reduces their workload, giving them time to focus on other things, including their personal lives. Employee empowerment includes motivating employees to improve their productivity. In the case study, employee empowerment applies in different areas. The first one is employee reskilling through instituted workforce planning and learning journeys.

The second one is providing a platform and resources needed to build learning agility. For instance, Walmart uses the Live Better U program to make it easier for employees to access and learn about options designed to assist them in unlocking their futures (Fan, 2019). The third one is using the right leadership and incentive structure to encourage a learning mindset. The fourth is facilitating job transition pathways with specific reskilling programs by creating strategic skill-mapping and workforce planning to identify opportunities and gaps and developing reskilling programs to facilitate job transitions from declining jobs to relevant jobs and from current relevant jobs to emerging jobs. Mutuality of interest in the organization occurs when employees and the organization benefit from each other. This concept is applied by demonstrating how upskilling employees contributes to improved employee productivity and organizational performance.

How do the events in the case study affect the employees’ daily work tasks?

The events in the study include employee upskilling through training development and automation. Upskilling equips employees with new knowledge and skills, thus improving their productivity in the workplace. The new knowledge and skills also create a competitive advantage for employees in the job market, thus increasing their chances of getting better jobs and effectively completing assigned tasks. Employee training and development also prepares employees for changes in the business environment and how to deal with them to ensure that they efficiently complete the daily tasks in the workplace. For instance, training employees on how to use technology in the workplace prepares them for the application of technology in the workplace, thus making it easier for them to complete daily tasks. Automation assists employees in completing daily tasks within the shortest time. Automation also gives employees more time to deal with the most important tasks in the organization.

Conclusion

The modern-day workplace demands staying updated on changes that could impact employees’ productivity. Organizations need to continuously train their employees to equip them with new knowledge and skills to complete assigned tasks effectively. Organizations also need to keep employees empowered by giving them incentives to encourage the development of new knowledge and skills. Automation may change an organization’s workforce structure because an organization may not need employees to complete tasks that can be automated, thus creating job insecurity.
