Key Term and Why the Interest

I am interested in gaining an in-depth understanding of operations management because it is core to the success of an organization. In particular, multinational organizations require operations planning and control because they serve a larger market and have significant human resources. Through operations management, top-tier organizational managers forecast demand and plan operations accordingly (Akalegbere, 2022): Operations Management.

Also, operations management is critical to capacity building, as managers determine the size of facilities and the number of employees required to achieve organizational objectives. Additionally, managers can determine the best location for stores, factories, and offices (Akalegbere, 2022). In that respect, most organizations target locations that allow low-cost production. Apple, one of the leaders in the smartphone production industry, manufactures smartphones in China due to the relatively low costs compared to the US, its home country.

Explanation of the Key Term

According to Salah et al. (2023), operations management refers to the orchestration of production processes within an organization. The mandate of operations management extends from designing and planning these operations to efficiently converting inputs to outputs through meticulous resource management. Some of the organizational resources that require meticulous management include labor, materials, and technology utilization. One of the operations that is geared toward ensuring that inputs are successfully converted into outputs is quality management.

The end goal of quality management is to ensure that products or services align with consumer expectations. Inventory planning is also crucial to avoid losing revenue due to shortages or wastage after producing more than is required in the market. Further, the material requirements planning concept, an operations management function, facilitates effective production and inventory planning by synchronizing demand with material availability.

The authors particularly talk about the challenges and opportunities of operating in India. As one of the largest economies in the world, India presents businesses with opportunities to thrive. However, there are challenges that businesses face operating in China, hence the need for them to come up with strategies to overcome these challenges so that they can thrive in the country.

Nur et al. (2023) aver that the business opportunities available in India encourage businesses to enter into partnerships with local Indian companies. As business organizations expand to the country, they must pay attention to the country’s huge IT sector and professional services. Also, businesses should consider the fact that a majority of the Indian workforce is made up of individuals from diverse cultures, hence the need to consider such factors during hiring and training processes.

Additionally, Nur et al. (2023) delve into the objectives of international operations management. One such objective is market expansion through increased market share by accessing new customers. Also, companies aim to optimize their global supply chain since they can access materials lacking in their home countries.

For instance, emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) are changing how organizations do business (Terwiesch et al., 2018). Other objectives include adapting to the emerging global business era and minimizing risks and uncertainty.

Discussion

The course module focuses on the objectives of global operations management, especially in the global business environment. Some of the goals of operations management, as identified by Akalegbere (2022), include quality management, location strategy, scheduling, process and capacity design, layout strategy, and design of goods and services. Nur et al. (2023) emphasize the need for companies to align with the local culture if they are to succeed. By giving the example of India, which is characterized by high-level technology and booming professional services, the author shows that every nation is unique, hence the need for operations management research to help organizations align with local demands.

(2023) focuses on the opportunities and challenges of expanding globally and the objectives that motivate these moves.
