Observation Techniques- Film Analysis
Thirteen is the film to be analyzed in this discussion that shows conformity and obedience. This is a 2003 film that tells the story of a teenage girl who enters the world of alcohol and sex due to peer pressure and conviction from her friend (Hardwicke, 2003). The main character in the story is Tract Freeland, who has a strong urge to be popular and gain respect among her peers. The moment her friend influences her, she finds herself caught up in sex and drugs, and this behavior affects her parents and other relatives (Hardwicke, 2003). The main character to be analyzed is Tracy Freeland, who is caught up in a life of sex and drugs because she wants to be famous and do what others are doing. From how she behaves in the film, one can see that she is easily taken away by peer pressure and can do things out of conviction from friends. The situation analyzed is the scene where Tracy is given a ride and taken to her home. Brook, Melanie, and EvIe are waiting for her in the living room at home. She is confronted by her folks about her drug indulgence and how she has had a bad influence on Evie. Within this scene, one can see that Tracy and Evie are defiant. They have disobeyed their parents by engaging in sex and drug abuse. At the same time, this scene also shows the idea of peer review since part of the conversation between the characters is that Tracy is a bad influence on Evie. The concept of conformity and obedience comes in within this scene because Tracy’s behavior indicates conformity to the trends and lifestyles of careless teenagers (Donaghue, Augoustinos, & Walker, 2014). On the other hand, obedience is seen in this scene when the family sets up a meeting to talk to Tracy about her drug abuse.
Obedience and conformity is a state in psychology that helps to explain the ability to obey authority. At the same time, it helps to explain the power of one to conform to the behaviors of others due to peer pressure. Social psychology scholars believe these factors shape a person’s behavior (Violato, King & Bulut, 2022). Obedience can shape behavior in the same way that conformity can shape a person’s behavior. This is shown in the film when the girls conform to peer pressure instead of being obedient.
