Nursing Values and Professional Ethics

Nursing Values and Professional Ethics

Nursing values and ethics are rooted in the principles of justice, caring, and advocacy for the underserved. These values are essential for undocumented immigrants, who are routinely denied access to basic health services. These individuals repeatedly face obstacles to care brought by harsh policies and the fear of deportation: Nursing Values and Professional Ethics.

Nurses must promote equality, keep dignity, and deliver care to everyone, regardless of their migration status (Flaubert et al., 2021). As a result, it is essential to push for efforts that make culturally competent and affordable healthcare for undocumented populations.

Health equity must be a significant concern in the provision of care, in line with the nursing code of ethics. Being ineligible for federal health coverage and facing discrimination, undocumented immigrants are at greater risk for health troubles. According to the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics, nurses should support fairness in society and help address health differences (Haddad & Geiger, 2023).

For these reasons, it is both appropriate and ethically required to bring this issue to the forefront of policy thinking. Besides, healthcare professionals are responsible for ensuring that no one is denied care as a result of their legal or social situation.

Law is the most significant factor that influences how much access undocumented immigrants have to healthcare. Restricting insurance plans for this group and instilling fears leads to fewer health services and undesired health outcomes. Political decisions should either strengthen or challenge the laws in society. Moreover, nursing professionals can shape political and legal matters when they consider ethical concerns and advocate for them.

According to Haddad and Geiger (2020), ethical guidelines help nurses evaluate justice in healthcare; thus, nursing professionals are expected to push for changes in discriminatory laws. In supporting undocumented communities, we ensure that nursing upholds its key purpose of supporting human rights and dignity.
