Nursing Theory
The chosen theorist is Hildegard E. Peplau. Hildegard E. Peplau is a pioneer theorist in psychiatric-mental nursing and the general nursing profession and nursing practice. Her nursing model, The Theory of Interpersonal Relations, focuses on the nurse-patient relationships and the roles of nurses throughout the caring process. In addition, the four components of the theory are person, environment, health, and nursing (Forchuk, 2021). The theory defines the importance of nurses developing close relationships with their patients and how such relationships are important to achieve a common wellness goal. In the Theory of Interpersonal Relations, Hildegard Peplau considered nursing a healing art based on a significant, therapeutic, and interpersonal process that seeks to assist a patient in need of nursing care. Peplau views nursing as an interpersonal process involving the interaction of more than one individual, one seeking health care and one responding to the care (Forchuk, 2021).
In her Theory of Interpersonal Relations, Hildegard Peplauefined well-being or health as “a word symbol that implies forward movement of personality and other ongoing human processes in the direction of creative, constructive, productive, personal, and community living” (Forchuk, 2021). According to the Interpersonal Relations Theory, the person is described as an organism. It is the organism that “strives in its own way to reduce tension generated by needs” (Forchuk, 2021). This organism tries to reduce the anxiety caused by the needs by seeking nursing and, therefore, becoming the client. Lastly, the environment in Hildegard Peplau’s Theory of Interpersonal Relations is defined as the forces existing outside of the person that influence their health. The theory encourages nurses to consider environmental or social factors such as culture during the development of a nurse-patient relationship during nursing.
