Nursing Research – Statistical Tests

Statistical Test Selected

In nursing, various statistical tests can be applied to test a health factor under study in a population. Among the commonly used tests include the one-sample t-test, two-sample t-tests, and paired t-tests. An independent sample (also a two-sample t-test) can be used to compare a health factor in two independent groups to establish the difference in the outcome of a continuous dependent variable.

Level of Measurement

Generally, t-tests in nursing are used to test a hypothesis on whether the treatment process has a different effect on a population or whether the two groups are different from each other (Campbell, 2017). The level of measurement for the difference between the two groups is based on a dependent variable, which compares the selected p-value and the critical value. This tells the researcher whether the mean differences are significantly different. The test can apply an ordinal measurement level where a population group can be referred to as healthy when the BMI falls within a particular range.

How an independent t-test can be applied in nursing research

An independent t-test can be used to test whether there is a difference in health status between men and women in a community (Giuliano, 2018). This can be decided by obtaining the heights and weights, then calculating the BMI and using the mean BMIs for the two groups to establish whether there is a difference in health status and which among the two groups is healthier. For instance, an analysis that yields men (M=19.24, SD=8.5) and women (M=23.45, SD=14) and t(100)= 5.4, p=0.006. The p-value obtained is less than the critical value of 0.05, which implies that the mean health status between the two groups is significantly different.
