NURS 4220 – Week 6 Practicum Discussion – Presenting a Quality Improvement Plan
Role of the staff nurse in promoting quality in a high-performing health care organization.
The nurse has a critical role when caring for patients. Nurses perform an admission assessment on patients when they are being triaged or admitted to a hospital. These assessments are used to ensure that the patient is receiving the proper services that are needed (Spath, 2018). Assessments are updated daily, and each shift, depending on the outcomes, a physician can increase the level of care required or discharge a patient home. As advocates for patients, nurses strive hard to provide medications as scheduled by the physician or have them changed to a time that the patient is used to taking them. Working with patients and their families will ensure that their needs and wishes are heard and fulfilled. Nurses promote quality care by being trustworthy to patients, providing education, avoiding corner-cutting, and providing safety and comfort (Spath, 2018).
Define the organizational culture of your healthcare organization, or one with which you are familiar, and identify the leadership style of the CEO and CNO in your organization.
In the past, I worked for a hospital that adopted a ‘Just Culture Leadership Style.’ Human error is inevitable, but it is how we can all learn from errors that set the stage for future events. The just culture model agrees that mistakes can and will occur with and without adverse outcomes (Bashaw & Lounsbury, 2012). If an error occurred, depending on what the error was, a poster board for education or a follow-up huddle was held to find out what led up to the incident and how it could be prevented. No one wants to make errors, but because the staff was not disciplined with harsh reprimands or suspension, more members were willing to speak up about near misses or errors. The CEO and CNO worked closely together with an adaptive leadership style. Communication was considered vital for all staff; if a problem arose, how did it start and why never single out a single employee or place blame?
Explain how your senior leadership supports changes that require financing/budget to support patient safety.
A meeting was held by the CNO, the director, and the clinical manager due to a shortage of infusion pumps. The CNO worked with other departments and had extra infusion pumps stored in central supply so that if a pump was needed, one could easily be found. Although it was not in the budget to purchase more pumps, a solution was found quickly because high-risk medications are used daily and need to infuse by the IV pump only.

Describe the strategies you might be able to implement to move your healthcare organization to a high-performing organization.
A way to move the healthcare organization that I currently work in is to staff according to guidelines and recommendations. The organization often targets our support staff or nurses when a quick drop in patient census occurs. Due to the increased need for patient safety (Yoder-Wise, 2019), support staff and nurses should be allowed to stay in the unit. Most times, when nurses are sent home, the census will rebound shortly after and jeopardize the quality of care for existing patients on the unit. As mentioned in the video file, many patients are afraid to go to the hospital to cutting quality care to patients.

Question
NURS 4220 – Week 6 Practicum Discussion – Presenting a Quality Improvement Plan
By Day 7, provide feedback to each of your classmates about their storyboards. Discuss how clearly the problem
was presented, the data that was selected to support the quality and safety issue, the selected process improvement model, and the proposed plan to improve patient outcomes. Provide feedback on the overall content and professional presentation of the storyboard. Feedback should help energize the other student and help to improve a project that truly
may be implemented.
