NURS 3150 Week 6 Discussion – Use of Research in Clinical Practice

NURS 3150  Week 6 Discussion – Use of Research in Clinical Practice

This week’s discussion deals with the use of research in clinical practice. Research is of utmost importance in nursing because nurses can use research to deliver evidence-based care that endorses the quality of health care to patients, families,  and communities (Gray et al., 2017). Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the conscientious and judicious use of current best evidence in conjunction with clinical expertise and patient values to guide healthcare decisions (Titler, 2008). The use of current best evidence consists of evidence obtained from quantitative and qualitative research; verifiable evidence obtained from randomized controlled experiments; and the use of data from scientific principles, reports, and opinions from experts.

In order for research to be effective, one must not only research but put that research into practice (Titler, 2008). In my healthcare facility, there are some evidence-based practices I will implement in order to improve my patient’s health quality and safety. First and foremost is the issue of Hospital-Acquired Infections (HAIs). HAIs are infections contracted by patients while they’re receiving health care for another condition. They are very common in hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities. On any given day, about 1 in 31 hospital patients has an infection related to hospital care (CDC). I will prevent HAIs by adhering to evidence-based infection-control policies, which include practicing correct hand washing, wearing personal protective clothing, using barrier precautions, and keeping the healthcare environment clean. In addition, for Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), I will follow an evidence-based protocol, which is to provide oxygen to COPD patients. COPD is a progressive disease where inflammation (mostly due to smoking) in the lungs damages lung tissue and traps air in the lungs. However, some people are of the opinion that providing oxygen to COPD patients can create issues such as hypercarbia and acidosis. However, this is not true. Providing oxygen to COPD patients is the correct treatment based on evidence, and this helps prevent hypoxia and organ failure, thereby preventing the loss of lives.

NURS 3150  Week 6 Discussion – Use of Research in Clinical Practice

Throughout this course, I have acquired sufficient knowledge about research that will tremendously assist me in my practice as a nursing professional. I can now develop a research question from diverse issues pertaining to health; I am now acquainted with searching literature from different nursing databases in order to guide my research; I have also familiarized myself with methods of collecting data as well as knowing the appropriate research methodology to follow (quantitative or qualitative). All this knowledge will, in countless ways, help me in my practice as a nursing professional.

NURS 3150  Week 6 Discussion – Use of Research in Clinical Practice

Describe how you will use evidence-based practice to improve patient quality and safety in your healthcare setting. Be specific and provide examples. Then, explain how the knowledge gained about research in this course will support your role in practice as a nursing professional. Then, describe how you will use evidence-based practice to improve patient quality and safety. Be sure to include in your Discussion any unanswered questions that need to be considered by your classmates and/or Instructor.
