NURS 3150 Week 4 Discussion – Basic Characteristics of Qualitative Research

NURS 3150  Week 4 Discussion – Basic Characteristics of Qualitative Research

Qualitative research is a method used to define life experiences, beliefs, and public procedures from the viewpoints of the persons involved. Qualitative research focuses on naturally occurring, normal procedures in ordinary situations that permit us to discover the complexity, richness, and difficulty characteristics in the lives of human beings (Gray et al., 2017). While quantitative research makes sure of the data collection and analysis procedures before the study begins, qualitative research, on the other hand, permits the researcher to be flexible in his data collection and analysis, such as regulating the interview or focusing on group studies during data collection and this does not mean that qualitative research lacks rigor. (Gray et al., 2017).

In my own opinion, qualitative as well as quantitative data have very similar rigor and adherence based on the research. In qualitative studies, the researcher uses a systematic approach which that allows them to think theoretically while evaluating data provided by contributors. Unlike quantitative research, which uses numeric values for data measurement, qualitative research design makes use of words rather than numbers. (Gray et al., 2017).

In the reading article for this week, “Challenges of Nursing Handover: A Qualitative Study, data were gathered through a 4-month observation of nursing handovers by recording the conversations of nurses during shift reports. The study was conducted using a descriptive exploratory qualitative design with a content analysis approach, and nine in-depth interviews were conducted with the selected nurses (Sarvestani et al., 2015).

NURS 3150  Week 4 Discussion – Basic Characteristics of Qualitative Research

The research question I discussed for week one is: does medication adherence leads to fewer emergency room visits and hospital readmissions, thereby improving patients’ quality of life? For this study, I will suggest a combination of both quantitative and qualitative research be used for this study. Since quantitative research uses numeric values for data measurement, it can be used to gather data like numbers of patients with medication nonadherence, numbers that lead to emergency room visits, and hospital readmissions, while Qualitative research will be useful to identify reasons for medications nonadherence, the impact of nursing education to medication adherence and how it can reduce emergency room visits and hospital readmissions.

Question

NURS 3150  Week 4 Discussion – Basic Characteristics of Qualitative Research

You will need to prepare and post a 350-word response that addresses the following:

Qualitative research often is viewed as not having the same rigor and adherence to objective standards as quantitative studies. Using the references provided to assist you, prepare an argument to either support or refute this claim and post it to the Discussion. In your response, explain if qualitative research does or does not have the controls needed to generate the results that contribute to the nursing knowledge base.

Then, explain if qualitative research could be used to investigate the patient safety problem you identified in Week 1.
