NURS 3110 Week 5 Discussion – Facilitating Patient Engagement With Health IT Systems

When it comes to patient portals, we must first understand what a patient portal or patient health record is. Hebda & Czar (2013) describes patient portals as “electronic systems that allow people to record, access, and share health-related information in order to help them better manage their health and healthcare.” There are many benefits to patient portals.

One of the biggest benefits would be that it improves a patient’s medical knowledge and enhances the patient’s experience. Jasik (2016) states, “The purpose of these provisions is to provide open access for patients or parents to health records.” By having this tool, patients are able to take their health care into their own hands and be in control. Another benefit would be that it improves the patient and provider, all while being more cost-effective and decreasing the use of Emergency department visits. A patient is able to communicate with the provider about issues via their patient portal. The trust of patients and healthcare providers is also improved because it appears that healthcare providers are being more transparent with all reports and values because they are easily accessible. Patients are able to communicate with healthcare workers via messaging, which is very helpful. All of these factors are improving these relationships.

Utilizing patient portals also improves patient quality and safety. If we are able to efficiently share data with patients, we are able to educate these patients and share all data electronically. A patient feels valued when there is transparency and information is easily accessible. Patients are also able to improve their overall health if they can access this data and follow their values more closely. Hebda & Czar (2013) state, “Patients using PHR had higher quality of care for diabetes, high blood pressure, and hyperlipidemia than nonusers.” The benefits are extensive for the use of patient portals. We are able to improve patient safety and quality by utilizing patient portals.
