NUR2214 Written Reflection

Throughout this semester, I have seen a radical shift in my professional values and perceptions of older adults. Their uniqueness appeals to me more now than ever because I have come to appreciate that every individual embodies a distinct personal narrative, preferences, and strengths. At first, I had oversimplified stereotypes of aging, but working on case studies and participating in discussions made me realize how important such care is. To illustrate, my perception of an older adult who did exceptionally well professionally during their retirement taught me to rethink everything and appreciate all human beings with the utmost respect (Boggatz, 2020): NUR2214 Written Reflection.

Equally important, I have become more informed about the impact of ageism on the provision of care. This self-reflection on biases made me challenge and disallow stereotypes, such as the belief that older adults do not embrace technology. This understanding is what fuels my desire to promote non-discrimination in my future practice (Fong & Wang, 2023). In addition, I appreciate more now than before that genuine respect and active listening aid in the development of trust and rapport with older adults.

In the future, I will focus on empowering older adults by addressing their care needs and goals in a holistic manner. My aim is to promote their autonomy and quality of life by engaging them in decision-making processes. One example is that I intend to include their preferences in the care plan while also advocating for the elimination of barriers to resource access, such as assistive devices or technology training (Boggatz, 2020). Furthermore, I will promote inclusivity in the care setting by employing cultural humility as well as communicating openly with elderly patients and their families.

Understanding the value of meaningful participation, I will also look for ways to support patient’s social and emotional health (Fong & Wang, 2023). This way, I am able to provide care that addresses their needs while simultaneously improving their overall quality of life. This way, I demonstrate my critical and reflective thinking learned throughout the semester, as well as my commitment to loving and person-centered care.
