Discuss the Defining Characteristics of Telehealth

The internet has a vast impact on many areas in our world, including transforming traditional healthcare into a more modernized way of meeting medical needs. Telehealth is one of the ways the internet has modernized healthcare as we know it. Via remote technologies, healthcare delivery, health education, and health information services are taking place[ CITATION Fat17 \l 1033 ]. Personally, describing telehealth would be a convenient way to enable healthcare providers to monitor, educate, follow up on data collection, and provide multidisciplinary care, which could include – remote interventions, pain management, and family support in modern practice via digital forms, such as computers, cell phones, and tablets.

Telehealth services have significantly impacted the nursing practice; they encounter both enthusiasm and resistance. The use of technology has increased nursing productivity in the day-to-day process. This technology improves patient safety, decreases nurses’ workload, and improves patient care in urban, suburban, and rural areas [ CITATION Fat17 \l 1033 ]. Telehealth for nurses aims to enhance empathy, attention to detail, and communication skills, all while adding the convenience of services to the process. However, with the growing impact of telehealth nursing, more academic studies need to be added to practical training and academic programs. Such a curriculum would enhance the ability to conduct telehealth visits proficiently. [ CITATION Fat17 \l 1033 ]

Examine How Telehealth Is Currently Integrated into Healthcare

The integration of telehealth into healthcare helps significantly reduce the barriers and challenges of getting to and from doctors’ appointments, especially for those faced with obstacles to accessing care. Eliminating traveling long distances through telehealth services allows small rural hospitals to provide services at a lower cost, benefiting rural patients. Telehealth helps small hospitals and providers’ viability in rural areas. The telehealth system is also valuable to tertiary care centers by keeping beds open for critical care needs (Muzammil, S. 2020). Telehealth allows for better and more efficient communication among healthcare workers, allowing continuity of care between all members.

Provide A Detailed Description of a Recommended Evidence-Based Strategy to Implement Telehealth

Implementing telehealth and helping health care providers offer services, some recommendations could allow providers to expand their access to multiple settings and locations to allow for success with telehealth.

The first strategy would be to assess and confirm that this population and area are ready for telehealth service, followed by an analysis to identify unmet needs. Many patients are remote in this scenario, and the 100-bed hospital struggles to meet this population’s needs. Due to a lack of provider access, this hospital experiences delays in patient care and chronic care management. Also, patients report difficulties in transportation for future appointments, complaints regarding the lack of reliable, fast service for regular patient care consults, and lingering concerns for their overall health. Determining and meeting needs for the population’s needs is vital since much is elderly; it is best to keep it simple and easy for this community.

It is essential to analyze the community’s readiness since telehealth services are available on electronic devices. The older generation may lack the knowledge base or access to use telehealth. For example, when serving patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, CHF, hypertension, or arthritis, aim to supply them with user-friendly equipment that monitors blood glucose levels, blood pressure, and weight.

Thirdly, the availability and accessibility of devices that upload directly into their electronic health record via phone or the internet are vital to telehealth services’ success with this population (Martin, A.B., 2012). Additional focus on evidence-based practice regarding what best suits this population’s needs and focusing on privacy and HIPAA compliance. Services provided must deliver care that is within standards established by HIPAA. An example would be verifying that the specific telehealth technology complies with local and federal laws.

Patients seek out telehealth services for convenience. With the implementation of telehealth services, the rural community can renew prescriptions and manage their chronic health conditions right from home. With the ability to have telehealth services’ conveniences, patients tend to manage their healthcare needs more efficiently (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). For example, lack of transportation to a follow-up appointment poses an issue; however, there is no issue through telehealth, which will help this population stay on track with their healthcare needs. The best practices can create a starting point to help implement necessary remote care for needy patients. However, it does not replace in-person visits; telehealth services can benefit this rural community.

Analyze how evidence-based practice influences healthcare technology

Scenario

You are a nursing case manager working in a 100-bed community hospital in a rural setting. Many patients are elderly with chronic health conditions and have several factors that impair their timeliness of follow-up appointments for chronic care management. The specific difficulties reported by patients include the fact that many of the patients are remote, and the hospital struggles to meet the needs of this community health population.

The hospital experiences a delay in patient care and chronic care management due to a lack of provider access. Many patients report difficulty arranging their appointments’ transportation needs, further limiting their availability. Patient complaints have increased regarding the lack of reliable, prompt service for patient chronic care consults and lingering concerns for their overall health.

The Chief Nursing Officer has assigned you to the Clinical Standards and Innovations Committee to examine strategies for best practices related to the use of telehealth to support rural settings and expand care to all community populations. As the lead RN on the committee, you have been tasked with leading the telehealth initiative and have one month to research, analyze, and propose the best evidence-based strategy. You will present your findings to the facility’s Chief Nursing officer and CEO in a summary leveraging your committee’s recommendation.

Instructions

You have been asked for the summary to include the following components:

  1. Discuss the defining characteristics of telehealth. Include your definition of telehealth.
  2. How does telehealth impact nursing practice
  3. Examine how telehealth is currently integrated into healthcare
  4. Describe the evidence-based approach that supports the use of telehealth in rural and community healthcare settings.
  5. Provide a detailed description of your recommended evidence-based strategy to implement telehealth.
  6. Provide a rationale supporting your strategy.
