NR 603 CCN Benefits & Drawbacks to A Telehealth Visit

The presented case is of a 16-year-old male with major depressive disorder at high risk of suicidality. Following this, telehealth is a digital platform that facilitates communication between caregivers and their patients. Telehealth is convenient and comfortable to use, provides a better guarantee of protection from infectious diseases and hospital-acquired infection as it eliminates the need for hospital visitation, and facilitates the integration of family members into therapeutic care plans as it allows the patients to connect with their caregivers at the comfort of their homes. It is also a cost-cutting modality as it eliminates costs that would have otherwise been incurred when seeking care (Gajarawala & Pelkowski, 2021). Telehealth also bridges apparent care gaps accustomed to proximity and remote geographical locations. However, there are a number of drawbacks to telehealth, including concerns about data security and privacy as well as occasionally technological difficulties.

To facilitate the use of telehealth, the workspace will be arranged such that it is well-lit. Additionally, videoconferencing tools will have to be availed for both the caregiver and the patient. In Jarret’s case, the technology that can be used best is videoconferencing. It allows the caregivers to observe non-verbal cues that may be suggestive of the actual mental position of the client. Consent can be obtained through digital forms. Notably, the client being a 16-year-old is allowed to make an informed consent for himself. Boceta et al. (2021) report that minors can sometimes be allowed to consent to treatment during mental healthcare.

The impact of the social determinants of health on the client can be assessed through an interview involving the client and family members. In this respect, information on the neighborhood he lives in, his beliefs and preferences, his schooling, and access to healthcare, including his adoption of diverse health resources such as vaccinations, will be asked for and documented. Subsequently, a safety plan for Jarret will involve his family members. It will entail assessing the client’s risk for suicidality, helping the family members create a protective environment, and teaching the client problem-solving and coping skills.
