NR 505 Week 4 Discussion – Qualitative Research – Collaboration Café

The qualitative approach examines a way to understand a phenomenon or idea in more detail. The control is limited to the approximation and requires a larger research group for a more accurate representation of the study population. This method is usually done with interviews, open-ended questions, and focus groups and is aimed at a more comprehensive understanding of answerers (Rhodes, 2014).

Small vs. Large Studies or Groups

A smaller study group is usually used due to the large amount of studies needed in order to collect enough data to represent a study population. The research when larger study groups are used results in lengthy and complicated research studies, making the smaller groups more popular to use in the qualitative approach (Brannen, 2017).

Advantage and Disadvantage

An advantage is a smaller group is used, and the data collecting can vary and can be less structured. These studies are commonly a good start for larger and more detailed studies in the future as new and undiscovered information and ideas are recognized (Rhodes, 2014).

A disadvantage is small research groups are used; there is a lot of work and commitment to be put into a study that cannot then represent the entire population because of its small size (Rhodes, 2014).

The Quantitative Approach and Controls

The quantitative approach examines an idea or phenomenon aimed at identifying a relationship between certain characteristics being studied. This approach allows more control and uses larger groups to recognize patterns and statistics that can be easily measured (Rhodes, 2014).

Small vs. Large Studies or Groups

This approach uses a larger number and represents a general population with more accuracy. A smaller group cannot be easily used because the measurement of data would be less accurate when statistical techniques are applied (Brannen, 2017).

Advantage and Disadvantage

An advantage is allowing for information to be examined from a relatively large number of participants, allowing the comparison of a broader population where a numerical representation can be decided with accuracy (Rhodes, 2014).

A disadvantage is unlike qualitative, a control group must be used, and it is difficult to recognize undiscovered information (Rhodes, 2014).
