NR 503 Week 5 Discussion-Open Forum Discussion

When collecting epidemiological data, there are various factors of consideration. Primarily, the main factor of interest is the social determinants of health, like education, environment, social support networks, and employment (Artiga & Hinton, 2018). The cultural assessment tool is vital in collecting this information because it links patients, clinicians, and other care providers interested in a phenomenon (Cultural Competency Provider Self-Assessment Tool (CCPSA), n.d.). Hence, the main cultural determinants influencing nursing practice include governance, communication, language, and accountability. The social determinant of health is a key aspect of nursing that increases awareness of how different cultures impact awareness and practice.

Epidemiology is the study of determinants of health within a specified patient population. The epidemiological data can be collected from either primary or secondary sources. Each of these methods of data collection has its pros and cons. For instance, primary data is collected by an investigator for a particular purpose. However, collecting this data is expensive and only convenient when secondary data is unavailable.

On the other hand, secondary data is information used for a purpose other than the original one (Artiga & Hinton, 2018). Examples of secondary data include census reports, registries, patient records, and insurance forms, among others. Epidemiological data is essential because it informs clinical practice.

The social determinants of health are critical in informing clinical practice. With the evolution of the healthcare sector, the US is incorporating different factors to improve health and achieve equity in the industry. The shift from the traditional system is essential because it addresses multiple factors that drive health and its outcomes. Hence, the social determinants of health are vital sources of epidemiological data that can inform the nursing practice and enhance care provision.

The ideas and beliefs underpinning the discussions guide students through engaging dialogues as they achieve the desired learning outcomes/competencies associated with their course in a manner that empowers them to organize, integrate, apply, and critically appraise their knowledge in their selected field of practice. Discussions provide students with opportunities to contribute level-appropriate knowledge and experience to the topic in a safe, caring, and fluid environment that models professional and social interaction. The ebb and flow of a discussion is based on the composition of student and faculty interaction in the quest for relevant scholarship. Participation in the discussion generates opportunities for students to engage in writing the ideas of others by carefully reading, researching, reflecting, and responding to the contributions of their peers and course faculty. Discussions foster the development of members into a community of learners as they share ideas and inquiries, consider perspectives that may be different from their own and integrate knowledge from other disciplines.
