NR 351 Week 3 Discussion – Collaborative Strategies with Other Professions
Communication is golden. In the world of nurses, communication is one of our best weapons. To collaborate with our peers, we need good communication skills. Communication is not only interacting with word of mouth, but it includes the way we carry ourselves. Our body language says a lot about the message we are trying to convey. Collaborating with peers is inevitable in a healthcare facility. Collaborating with other disciplines requires good communication skills, professionalism, giving each other respect, and knowing what you are talking about.
Nurses and healthcare teams must work together to achieve a common goal of providing the best care for the client (Hood. 2018, p.106). When every discipline brings its own ideas to the table, it yields better outcomes and patient satisfaction. At times there are shortcomings in patient care; there is no need to blame one another; this is where patience and professionalism come to play, and then re-strategizing and changing the plan of care should be done. Our focus is the patient.
We have an Interdisciplinary meeting at my job on Thursdays; it includes nurses, behavioural health specialists, physical therapists, and social workers. We present cases that the field nurse or anyone other discipline needs help managing; anybody can ask you any questions at any time, so you have to be on your Ps and Qs. It is good to do your homework before you present your case. We have rules: when one person is talking, we are not allowed to cut in until that person is done. You write your questions down and talk when the person is done. It is also a ground for learning in case you get a similar case in the future you so will know what to do. Interprofessional collaboration in healthcare can help to reduce preventable adverse drug reactions, decrease mortality rates, and optimize medication dosages.

Collaboration is the cornerstone of success in any team. Inter-Professional collaboration is one of the trademarks of several highly successful healthcare innovations. When nurses collaborate with other healthcare providers, patient outcomes and quality of care tend to improve. It also improves the coordination and communication between healthcare professionals and, thus in turn, improves the quality and safety of patient care. The interdisciplinary collaboration approach allows both the individual and collective skills and experience of team members to function together more effectively and deliver a higher level of services than each would working alone.
