Navigating Team Challenges- A Leadership Perspective

Navigating Team Challenges- A Leadership Perspective

A recent significant leadership scenario I have experienced as a medical records officer at the Arizona Department of Corrections involves efforts to upgrade the existing medical records system to a more advanced artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled system with the capacity for big data analytics. The decision-making process involves collecting data on the need for the technological upgrades and presenting this data to the stakeholders, identifying alternatives to the technologies, educating the stakeholders on the proposed tech upgrades, ensuring open communication, and collecting different perspectives on the issue from the stakeholders. Eventually, the more fitting alternative will be selected and implemented.

The decision-making process in the scenario is complex and presents various challenges. For instance, there are a large number of stakeholders who will need to be consulted before decisions can be made. The decision-making also requires professional input, and a majority of the stakeholders may lack the necessary technological literacy to understand the technologies and make the right decisions.

This team leadership scenario creates a complex ethical challenge that must be resolved before the decision is made. Some ethical aspects that arise include fairness, transparency, and accountability in decision-making. A leader can ensure ethical considerations are integrated into the decision-making process by educating stakeholders on ethical principles to improve their ethical awareness and ethical reasoning skills, as well as by considering the impact of personality traits and personal values on ethical decision-making (Parks-Leduc et al., 2021).

Decision-making, ethics, and followership collectively contribute to effective team leadership by bringing together diverse perspectives on a problem and considering these perspectives to develop a solution. Ethical decision-making creates a culture of trust within teams (Breuer et al., 2020). This can improve the effectiveness of team leadership by further ensuring cohesiveness and commitment among the team members.
