National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) Competencies

National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) Competencies

The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) competencies provide a pathway towards quality nursing care. These competencies help nurses acquire the prerequisite skills necessary for clinical problem-solving (D’Aoust et al., 2022). This paper details these competencies and their applicability in psychiatry nursing.

The first NONPF competency is scientific foundations. This competency requires nurses to have the ability to analyze data and evidence used in advancing nursing practice critically, as well as integrate knowledge from other humanity sciences into nursing practice. The curriculum has imparted me the skills necessary to critically analyze scientific evidence and data and the significance of basing my practice on scientific evidence.

Leadership is another NONPF competency. This competency requires nurses to assume advanced leadership roles, demonstrate effective and efficient leadership skills, and have the ability to communicate practice knowledge effectively (Chan et al., 2020). The program details related content areas such as conflict resolution, teams and teamwork, leadership, change and change management, and problem-solving. These skills will enhance my competency as a nurse leader.

The third NONPF competency is quality. This competency requires nurses to utilize the best evidence to inform their practice. The program details aspects of quality improvement processes in psychiatric care, necessary in meeting this competency.

Practice inquiry is another NONPF competency. This competency requires nurses to apply their clinical investigative skills to enhance care outcomes. The program details aspects of clinical investigational strategies such as evidence appraisal, which are necessary to meet this competency.

The fifth NONPF competency is technology and information literacy. This competency requires nurses to integrate various health technologies into healthcare improvement (Chan et al., 2020). The program details the available healthcare technologies and their significance in improving knowledge management and care operationalizations.

Policy is another NONPF competency. It implores nurses to be health advocates who voice ethical policies that promote equitable, accessible, quality, and safe healthcare. The program has imparted to me the skills required for analyzing policies and related knowledge on health policies and healthcare reforms.

The seventh NONPF competency is the health delivery system. This policy requires nurses to apply their knowledge of organizational practices to improve healthcare delivery and utilize skills such as partnering and consensus building to effect healthcare changes. The program details the skills required for interprofessional collaborations and aspects of organizational practices necessary to meet this competency.

Ethics is another NONPF competency. This competency requires nurses to integrate ethical principles into their clinical decision-making processes. The program has been significant in preparing me to meet this competency by detailing the ethical considerations in clinical decision-making and the application of ethical principles in clinical decision-making and care delivery.

The last NONPF competency is independent practice. This competency implores nurses to maintain accountability in their professional nursing practice. The program details the current and emerging nursing professional standards and how to make clinical decisions based on scientific evidence. This knowledge will be helpful in meeting this competency.

As an NP, I understand my obligation towards health advocacy and education. For this reason, I intend to leverage my position as a health educator to bring positive social change to society by creating awareness of mental health illnesses. This will help in lessening traditional barriers to mental healthcare, such as a lack of knowledge on mental health illnesses.

The Florida Association of Nurse Practitioners is a statewide professional organization body for NPs advocating for patient-centered healthcare. This organization has been involved in knowledge expansion activities for nurses and continues to voice the concerns for NPs in the state pertaining to patient-centered care and the elimination of barriers to accessing quality care (FLANP, 2023). Through its platform, this organization advocated for expanding the scope of NPs. The organization advocated for full prescriptive authority, a feat that was achieved in 2016. Other important legislation spearheaded by the organization includes the designation of APRNs in Florida as autonomous licensed health professionals and APRNs’ authority to prescribe occupational therapy, sign death certificates, and sign fetal demise certificates.
