Narrated Journal- In two minds- Is mental illness really an illness–Madness

Hello, welcome to this narrated journal presentation. In this presentation, we’ll watch and review a film illustrating the history lens in action.

This presentation focuses on the video titled “In two minds: Is mental illness really an illness–Madness.” In the video, the patient is a woman complaining that her thoughts are being infiltrated by someone else. The doctor’s main argument is that mental illness is really an illness. This argument is supported by reviewing the concepts of madness and brain changes and the cause of mental illness. The video also answers three major questions exploring mental illness mainly: Is mental illness a disease? Mental disease or accident of birth? and What is illness?

The main challenges that the characters face in overcoming problems in wellness are chemical imbalance, poor brain functioning, stigma, and finding the proper medication. On the other hand, the benefits realized by the characters included learning to accept the diagnosis and how to coexist with other people in society despite having mental issues and receiving the appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Critically analyzing wellness adds value to interactions with people in personal and professional contexts in different ways. According to Swarbrick (2012), it gives the specialist treating the patient a clear background of the patient’s condition and provides the proper diagnosis and treatment. In addition, Swarbrick (2010) posits that the patient also gets guidance on recognizing and understanding triggers, thus managing their condition by preventing severe episodes. Lastly, Hodges & Myers (2010) argue that critical analysis also plays a significant role in helping the patient embrace their condition and work on changing their negative perception towards it, enabling the patient to speak up and look for help whenever they need it because they understand when they need help, enabling the specialist treating the patient to determine the most appropriate approach to help the patient and creating a friendly interaction between the specialist and patient.

Thank you.
