Method Comparison Journal Exercise-Qualitative and Quantitative Research Design

Characteristic Qualitative Quantitative
Research design This paper adopts a cross-sectional qualitative study design. This paper uses a correlational research design.
Sample size Twenty-one high-risk patients with bipolar disorder. 38 individuals with a lifetime diagnosis of bipolar I

(90%) or bipolar II (10%) disorder and their opposite-sex partners.

Sampling method Systematic sampling method. Cross-sectional studies majorly use systematic sampling to recruit specific participants to meet the specific purpose of the research and the unique nature of the population studied (Wang & Cheng, 2020). This research utilizes a purposive method. Purposive sampling methods are related to the research job and participant characteristics (Campbell et al., 2020). The study is focused on a specific population: individuals with BD I and BD II and their partners.
Procedure The local Institutional Review Board approved the study. The participants were also required to provide written informed consent. The collection of data proceeded using individual face-to-face semi-structured interviews. Firstly, all research procedures were approved by the local institutional

review board. The next step included recruiting couples to participate in the study and obtaining consent from the participants. The participants then completed several questionnaires and clinical interviews within six months.

Measures and instruments Utilized the assessment by the Tablets Routine Questionnaire (TRQ). Utilized the Structured Clinical Interview

for DSM–IV Axis I disorders for diagnosis

Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9 for depressive symptoms,

The Altman, Self-Rating Scale for Mania (ASRM; and Actor-Partner Interdependence Models

Data analysis technique The thematic content analysis Multilevel models
Results The research found that factors related to barriers to self-management in BD are personal, family, community, and provider and healthcare system-level barriers. Greater social support is linked to improved recovery of patients with BPD and their partners.
Readability of report The paper is readable. The paper is logically written.
Ethical considerations The paper considers research ethics by requiring participant consent before commencing the research. The research has considered ethics by requiring approval before the research.
Any other thoughts? BD has been well presented in the study. However, it does not provide any recommended management and treatment approaches for BD. Due to some major limitations to the study, the authors have managed to capture all elements of the research.

Question

Qualitative and Quantitative Research Design

In this journal exercise, you will observe and reflect on the similarities and differences in two published research studies (one qualitative, one quantitative) on a similar topic (See Patients’ Perceptions of Barriers to Self-managing Bipolar Disorder: A Qualitative Study Links to an external site. And Social Support and Relationship Satisfaction in Bipolar Disorder Links to an external site.). A table is provided for entering your observations. Before beginning this journal assignment, review the required resources for this week and read the two research studies. You may find it helpful to print out the studies and view them side by side, or if you have a large computer screen, have them both open to facilitate comparing their features. Download the Method Comparison Journal Exercise Form and save it to your computer. Fill in your name and the date, then the table’s cells with your thoughts on the characteristics of the articles. Save your entries and upload the completed file to Waypoint.
