Management Philosophy in Nursing

My management philosophy as a nurse is that I can go beyond my role of caring for patients, advocating for health awareness, and exercising my role with integrity and respect for individuals regardless of their background. According to Goodwin and Richards (2017), the best management practices should begin with self-care and self-awareness. Besides these, management practices should include good communication skills, accountability, good and trustworthy leadership, collaboration, teamwork, and integrity. A manager needs to perform such roles as directing, staffing, organizing, planning, and controlling. Nurse Managers are in charge of managing financial and human resources, ensuring staff and patient satisfaction, maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors, aligning the goals of the unit to those of the hospital, and ensuring that the quality and standards of care are maintained. To perform these roles effectively, it is important for the manager to practice good communication with other members, create an environment of mutual respect and trust, and foster such qualities as accountability and teamwork. Furthermore, Prezerakos (2018) highlights the importance of emotional intelligence in facilitating effective leadership.

The ideal relationship between a leader or manager and the employees must be camaraderie and communication. According to Choi, Kim & Kim (2018), communication is essential for the effective management and leadership of any organization since it facilitates the achievement of goals, enhances organizational effectiveness, and also enhances job satisfaction and organizational commitment among the employees. Through communication, a leader can foster proper relations with the employees, which develops an environment of trust and respect. The employees will be able to see their leader or manager as someone they can approach, enhancing the probability of learning from both the leader or manager and employees. Leadership and strategy are equally important in the relationship between managers, leaders, and employees, but these can only be enhanced through a relationship that encourages communication and camaraderie.

My role as a manager or leader in the organization would entail maintaining rigorous standards and quality of care for patients and ensuring that all team members abide by the safety protocols. It would also entail making decisions that are important to the organization and creating an environment that encourages communication and teamwork. To be most effective in an organization, it would be important to foster such qualities as good communication, accountability, and teamwork. It would also be important to ensure emotional intelligence as this will shape my relationship with other people in the organization. Some of the key challenges faced by nurses include turnover and burnout, and through emotional intelligence, it might be possible to get nurses through these challenges. Some of my major talents include empathy, good communication skills, and the ability to network or work in a team. My philosophy involves being an advocator and educator of good health, practicing proper care for patients, and treating people with the utmost respect. In order to create awareness regarding health, such talents as good communication skills and the ability to network can help me reach more individuals. Through empathy, I can properly care for my patients, and since I interact with diverse individuals, practicing respect is paramount.

The goal that I hope to achieve in my career as a leader or manager is that I will be able to ensure excellence in care for patients and create an environment of constant collaboration, communication, growth, and learning for all individuals in the organization.
