Decision-making processes and practices in the medical field continue to become more complicated as more diversity in morals, lifestyles, and religious values among individuals continues to grow. Further, medical institutions have faced numerous economic strains from malpractice and medical negligence. As such, medical institutions have taken steps to manage negligence and malpractice by putting together ethical committees.
Ethical committees are characterized by diverse individuals and are assigned the duties of preventing, studying, and taking action on unethical issues, including malpractice and negligence (Pozgar, 2019). The management process includes several steps, including creating relevant interventions to protect the rights of patients, coming up with solutions in cases of conflict, improving patient satisfaction, training staff on ethical knowledge, and creating techniques to prevent ethical issues in the future (Hajibabaee et al., 2016). Further management strategies include terminating treatments that can cause ethical issues, ensuring staff needs are met, and minimizing liability risk. Lastly, yet importantly, when there is a case of negligence or malpractice, a hospital’s ethical committee conducts an ethical analysis, which results in them deciding the best way forward for the medical institution.
