LGBTQ+ Identity, Healthcare Barriers for Undocumented Immigrants, and Minority Mental Health
Three primary areas were the focus of this literature search: LGBTQ+ identity, access to healthcare for illegal immigrants, and mental health among minorities. The first research question was, ‘How does ethnic discrimination affect the mental health of minority adolescents in urban settings?’ This research question is essential because it can increase understanding of the issues minorities face concerning mental health (Ahmed et al., 2022). This question exposes the trauma, depression, anxiety, and other mental issues that the youth from discriminated ethnic communities face and how they can accelerate the frequency and levels of mental health illness. With such knowledge, mental health experts can come up with necessary interventions.
The second research question was, ‘What are the barriers undocumented immigrants face when seeking healthcare services?’ This is a fundamental question because immigration and immigrants are a very significant challenge in the U.S. Those who are undocumented live in fear of deportation and other disciplinary measures by the U.S. government (Yu et al., 2020). Therefore, research in this area will reveal some factors that hinder them from seeking medical services, such as fear of deportation, language barriers, and lack of healthcare coverage. This research question is also important because it highlights how State and Federal policies disproportionately affect oppressed groups like undocumented immigrants.
The third research question was, ‘How does LGBTQ+ identity influence homelessness among young adults?’ There is a disproportionate representation of homeless youth in the U.S. due to stigma, family rejection, and discrimination. This group also gets very little support, and due to the community’s prejudice, they are afraid of seeking help, and their data in the healthcare document is inaccurate (Fraser et al., 2019). This research question is expected to open the eyes of society to the challenges this group is facing concerning help and how discrimination affects LGBTQ+ people, denying them access to essential services like health.
