Learning Style According to The VARK Questionnaire
Provide a summary of your learning style according to the VARK questionnaire.
My learning style, according to the VARK questionnaire, is multimodal preference. Multimodal strategies involve various combinations of visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic strategies. Students are required to be familiar with various learning methods for them to be more efficient (Willingham et al., 2015). With multimodal learning preference strategies, learners are able to tap into various learning modes that enhance their information retention rate. The advantages of this learning strategy are that learners are able to learn deeply and over a short duration. This deeper learning enhances mastery of content and, thus, better information retention. The attention of the learners is also upheld when they use various teaching strategies. Multimodal learning strategies form a step in the right direction for most learners since they enlighten students on particular preferences that they can make use of to ensure that they clinch a strong desire for new materials. Learners remain familiar with multiple learning styles, which can yield the best results in particular disciplines. Describe your preferred learning strategies. Compare your current preferred learning strategies to the identified strategies for your preferred learning style.
My ideal learning strategy is to read/write strategy. I have been taking advantage of the handouts and textbooks available when carrying out my studies for the purpose of examination. My desire to take my studies from the library has also contributed to my preference for this strategy. This preference makes use of printed words as the main tool for transmitting and receiving information. The kind of tools that this strategy utilizes include re-reading the available notes, glossaries, journals and textbooks and re-writing notes in different versions. This strategy also demanded I use many lists. The sole secret behind the success of this strategy is re-writing the given explanations and notes using one own words because this places someone in a better position to understand the concepts (Kim & Gilbert, 2015).
The identified learning strategy, according to the VARK, is a multimodal strategy. Comparing this with my preferred strategy, the read/write, there exists a number of differences in terms of learning outcomes and information retention. The multimodal strategy allows retention of information among the learners because they get familiarized with multiple strategies that fit in particular disciplines, unlike the reading/writing strategy, which only capitalizes on printed content.
Describe how individual learning styles affect the degree to which a learner can understand or perform educational activities. Discuss the importance of an educator identifying individual learning styles and preferences when working with learners.
Individual learning styles affect the degree to which learners understand and perform learning activities. Fundamentally, there are no two learners who can be the same. Therefore, there is no possibility that two learners can benefit from the same learning style. This calls for adjustment of the learning styles so that they can fit individual needs. The use of learning styles that are not individual preference actually leads to the wastage of time, harms learning, and also leads to the wastage of energy (Cuevas & Dawson, 2018). When using the preferred individual learning style, they positively impact the learner’s outcome because they tend to enjoy all the learning activities they undertake. This enhances their understanding as well as retention.
Importance of understanding individual learning styles
Learning and thinking styles are as important as intellectual abilities. Learning and thinking are put into jeopardy when the student’s thinking styles are ignored. Learning styles have a direct relationship with the performance of students in schools. Most learners are flexible in their learning styles, and they tend to cope with changing the degree of success in diverse learning situations. Learners do better when the assignment they are given suits their preferred thinking and Learning Styles. Most learners tend to settle in the learning happenings which are well-matched with their preferred learning elegances. In a similar manner, teachers tend to fix their teaching strategies to their preferred learning style. When the preferred teachers’ learning styles and the learners’ preferred learning styles coincide, the chances of better performance are very high. Therefore understanding one’s learning styles will ensure quality and better outcomes.
Discuss why understanding the learning styles of individuals participating in health promotion is important to achieving the desired outcome. How do learning styles ultimately affect the possibility of a behavioral change? How would different learning styles be accommodated in health promotion?
Understanding the learning outcomes of the individual participating in health promotion is essential because it optimizes the delivery of health information system. There are great impacts when administering the information channeled towards health literacy level only as well as in combination with preferred learning styles that can enhance patients understanding. Patient understanding is enhanced when personalized health information to the preferred levels of literacy enhances patient understanding.
Every individual has three different learning styles, which impact their lives in different means. They affect our relationships with friends and family as well as in schools. Learning style is usually a preference and not a stable trait (Mitchell et al., 2015). They slowly move from one situation to another. For instance, divergent style revolves mainly around originality and creativity. Individuals who prefer these learning styles are very imaginative, and they value interpersonal relationships. Such a style can impact their behavior because it will result in variations in how learners perceive issues. The assimilation style is concerned with rationality and action. Learners who commonly use this style are better at understanding matters easily than later placing them in an orderly and logical form. This can also impact their behaviors because whatever they are doing will be organized logically. This style results in problems when trying to solve complex problems and thus can also impact their behavior.
Three tips can be used to accommodate the different learners in health promotion. These are understanding the different learning styles possessed by different people, providing an uncommon experience, and allowing them to carry out tasks at their own pace (Asiry, 2016). Taking a moment to visualize various styles present among the population that you are handling provides one with insights into what one can do next. Also, giving learners an uncommon experience will also respond in the same manner. This helps in meeting various learning styles because learners remain actively involved.
