Leadership Thought and Creativity

Leadership has been a fascinating topic in the history of social science research. Basically, leadership is a process of directing influence; it is a relationship between leaders and followers (Thanh & Anh, 2015). In this regard, influence implies that the leader communicates ideas and motivates followers to accept and support the ideas and implement them through change (Thanh & Anh, 2015). Arguably, Mumford et al. (2007) posit that an effective exercise of influence demands a leader to think. To that point, I will be refuting the statement, “A leader’s thinking has minimal influence on his/her behavior in a leadership capacity.” Effective leadership relies on critical thinking, which, in turn, impacts a leader’s behavior or decisions they make.

Cognition is a critical factor that impacts leadership emergence, behavior, and performance (Mumford et al., 2015). Firstly, research has shown that cognition, thought, or reasoning shapes how leaders formulate visions and how they visualize and articulate these visions to key stakeholders (Mumford et al., 2015). In addition, applying cognition capacities may influence how and how effectively a leader interacts with their subjects (Mumford et al., 2015). Thirdly, forecasting in leadership requires creative thinking, which aids in formulating a vision. A report by Partlow et al. (2015) holds that formulating prescriptive mental models forms the foundation for forecasting, enabling the formulation of stronger vision statements, which, in turn, impacts leadership behavior. Notably, Martin Luther King, Jr. is one of the world’s most famous influential leaders. He led the African-American Civil Rights Movement and played a significant role in the fight against discrimination. As discussed above, reasoning shapes how leaders formulate their visions. Similarly, Martin Luther King’s leadership style involved thinking, visualizing, and acting. Essentially, Martin led a peaceful protest in Washington, D.C., and later, a law prohibiting racial discrimination was passed (“Martin Luther King Jr.: An Influential Leader”, 2013). In this regard, believing in racial equality is the leader’s thinking and vision, and directing a peaceful march is the leader’s behavior. Therefore, it is evident that a leader’s thinking significantly influences their behavior in a leadership capacity.
