Course Reflection

Leadership is not often an innate skill. To be a leader or to lead a team effectively, one must put their work or roles into continually improving their skills so they can be the best leader possible. Action research learned through the ECE 660 course has influenced change and improvement in education by helping me acquire leadership skills and empowering me to be a future leader of change in early childhood education. Action research is simultaneously examining issues and taking action to resolve them. Action research has helped me to acquire leadership skills such as reflection, problem-solving, creativity, and integrity. Through intentional action research, sustained the dynamic and recursive procedure of inquiry where the instructor acts ethically and purposefully in a particular classroom framework to enhance learning or teaching, I was able to strengthen and improve my teaching skills, especially leadership skills, to help me come up with changes in the ECE education in the future.

Action research as a course was convenient for developing learning and teaching. Everything from practical classroom assessment to management of learners’ behaviours can be achieved or be the focus of thorough action research without disrupting class time. It also enables me as a teacher to reflect on whatever I wish to change, explore what other people are doing in the education field, and then research with practice in a controlled design. What inspires me to influence change is the feeling that learners from low-income families do not get the quality of education they need; hence, they are often left behind and end up underperforming and not successful in class. Therefore, for the change, the mission that will propel it is transforming the lives of learners and their families living in poverty by offering access to quality learning. The vision would be that one’s background should not determine one’s educational success. Using the mission, vision, and knowledge attained from action research will help me implement informed change in education.

Program Reflection

Through the action research unit, I have developed and improved my leadership skills, especially in my current role as a teacher. First, the action research process has helped build my leadership knowledge and skills by nurturing my facilitation, team management, problem-solving, and team-building skills. It has also helped me understand the problems of the team members and how to work collaboratively to realize the pre-defined goals. Most importantly, the unit taught me that I should not hold a position to be a leader or a director of change. I can initiate a change without being a leader using action research knowledge. I can conduct action research about learners and act by providing solutions to the problem. For instance, in my current role as a teacher, I have used leadership skills such as collaboration to assist our learners in improving their performance, whereby I engaged three staff members and talked to them. We teamed up with three teachers and formed a free tuition time to assist learners from less privileged families who lag in class.

Integrative and Critical Thinking Expectations

Remarkably, the course ECE660, particularly the unit action research, has been a true eye-opener. It has offered me incredible insights, which have made my teaching experiences much smoother and more enjoyable. Action research ensured that I acquired the necessary skills such as problem-solving, facilitation, and, most importantly, collaboration skills that I have used to influence the lives of many learners in my current role as a teacher. This unit widened my prospect of teaching by equipping me with research knowledge and skills which I can use to identify learners’ issues in a classroom and act upon them by providing research-based solutions to these issues. Previously, I thought that as a teacher, I was only a leader to learners, but through the unit and especially the course, I realized that teachers are leaders by choice and one does not have to hold a leadership position to change. Therefore, the knowledge gathered from experience and this course will help me be an effective teacher in the future and, most importantly, help me formulate changes in ECE education. This course helped shape my future career as a teacher and has ensured that I embrace reflection and be a solution-finder to learners’ issues for effective learning.
