Leadership Reflection-Course Reflection

Integrate leadership and management principles and attributes in nursing practice

Leadership and management principles are important during nursing care (Weiss et al., 2019). In this course, I read through the coursework materials provided and noted how to achieve leadership and managerial skills. I learned that there are ways one can achieve these two competency skills. First, as a practicing nurse, it is essential to identify one’s weaknesses and strengths. I also learned that I could achieve these skills by developing my communication skills with other healthcare providers upholding the values and beliefs in the hospital setup.

The other new knowledge gained after this coursework is the use of the DECIDE model to make decisions (Guo, 2020). DECIDE model is an abbreviation for Definition of problem, the establishment of criteria, consideration of any other alternative, identification of an outstanding alternative, development of a plan, and lastly, action, which involves implementation. This knowledge will impact my nursing practice by deciding on a ground of uncertainties. It will also prepare me to face and embrace positive and new nursing care protocols. My management skills will help me encourage my team members in a hospital setup to collaborate for the benefit of the patient.

Use evidence-based practice to guide clinical reasoning and clinical judgment as a basis for nursing decision making

Evidence-based nursing practice is a guide in the decision-making process. In this course, I learned the importance of evidence-based practice during nursing care. I learned that evidence-based practice helps to provide updated knowledge in terms of care, improving the health outcomes of patients. I also learned that it allows me as a nurse to conduct a research evaluation to identify the effectiveness of specific treatments and conditions. It will impact my practice by guiding clinical reasoning and management of various conditions.

Collaborate in healthcare delivery systems settings for improved patient outcomes

The other skill that I learned in this module is collaboration. I learned that teamwork helps in the holistic care provided to patients. When different specialties assess and review a patient, there is a higher chance of not missing out on any problem. I also learned that collaboration is better enhanced through interprofessional communication. This will impact my practice by establishing a good rapport with other healthcare providers and patients.

Demonstrate principles of professional identity and professionalism for the nurse within the context of regulatory and practice standards

After doing an assignment on identifying a current issue identified by State Nursing Boards, I gained knowledge on the board’s role. I learned that they are responsible for licensing, evaluating license certificates, and resolving renewals. I also learned that they are responsible for carrying out disciplinary action against any misconduct from a licensed nurse (L’Ecuyer et al., 2018). In my practice, I will be aware of the requirements of the boards to avoid any disciplinary action.

Analyze agencies that influence the provision of nursing care in the healthcare system

In this module, I completed an assignment on disaster planning. It majored in the role of nurses in disaster planning and the responsibilities of stakeholders taking part in the management of disasters. I learned that nurses have the role of assessing and evaluating the populations at risk during disasters. I also learned that they are tasked with the role of development and implementation of care plans. In my practice, I will take part in assessing and evaluating those at risk. I will work with the respective agencies in response to any disasters.

Formulate decisions based on the legal and ethical underpinnings that improve healthcare

In addition, I learned about different challenging scenarios during patient care. The nurse needs to abide by the ethical principles that are legally acceptable. I also learned how to handle scenarios such as malpractice from a colleague and patient negligence. The nurse manager should be upfront in ensuring the cultural beliefs and moral values are upheld (Rainer et al., 2018). I learned that for a nurse to protect the rights of the patients and other healthcare providers in an unbiased manner, they should make decisions based on legally accepted ethical principles. This will help me in the future when dealing with challenging situations. I will apply ethical principles such as autonomy, confidentiality, beneficence, and justice during the administration of care.
