Leadership Importance in Implementing Policies
Leadership plays a vital role in implementing policies when action needs to be taken when addressing a public problem. Policies state what needs to be achieved and are created to ensure that the objectives are met. On the other hand, leadership can determine whether a policy is implemented successfully or not. Leadership factors such as decision-making, communication, and knowledge affect policy implementation, helping leaders navigate risks and clear uncertainties.
Effective leaders are known to make decisions in order to address public problems. Being a skilled decision-maker requires high analytical and interpretive skills to address and resolve issues. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the government was entrusted with preventing the virus from spreading, leading to policy implementations. Consequently, the decision to put the country under lockdown.
Furthermore, some of the aspects of effective leadership crucial in policy implementation include communication. Accordingly, leaders must communicate and share ideas or decisions before implementing a policy. According to Kotter (2006), leaders should first establish a direction and later communicate to all parties involved in the process of policy implementation. The second aspect of effective leadership vital in policy implementation is the possession of high knowledge. Effective leadership facilitates both internal and external knowledge and problem-solving during policy implementation (Carmeli et al., 2013). Knowledge helps leaders navigate risks and uncertainty, avoiding tension and confusion during policy implementation.
In conclusion, effective leadership in policy implementation is grounded in leadership traits. Subsequently, it is evident that policy implementation would fail without effective leadership traits, and problems would not be addressed accordingly.
