What are the purposes of our criminal justice system? In your opinion, is one goal more important than another? | Primarily, the purpose of the criminal justice system is to remit justice to all through conviction and castigation of those found guilty, helping them reform while subsequently protecting the general public. In my view, these goals are interrelated but independent such that none is more important than the other. For instance, holding perpetrators responsible for crimes committed is not more or less important than protecting the public and preventing crime. |
Can a criminal defendant be prosecuted twice for the same act? | In the US, a suspect can be prosecuted more than once for the same offense. Although the Double Jeopardy Clause prohibits any individual from being prosecuted twice for considerably the same crime, not every sanction qualifies under this rule (Derry, 2019).

Define each of the following: white collar crime, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and RICO. | White-collar crime, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and RICO are common terms in the criminal justice system. White-collar crime describes a non-violent crime committed by individuals, businesses, and government institutions for financial motives. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act is a US federal law that sets requirements for management and public accounting firms, and public company boards (CFI, n.d). The primary goal of this act is to improve corporate financial disclosure accuracy and reliability for the benefit of investors. Finally, RICO is a federal law that allows the trial of syndicate leaders for crimes they ordered or assisted others commit, closing a perceived loophole (Justia, n.d).

What is the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act? | Computer Fraud and Abuse Act is a US cybersecurity bill that prohibits access to a computer without authorization or beyond authorization (EveryCSReport, 2014). |
What is a whistleblower? What conflicting ethical duties might a whistleblower encounter? | A whistleblower is often an employee who unveils information on an organization that is deemed against the law and moral ethics (Berg, 2020). Whistleblowing conflicts with loyalty and fairness moral values. They must be loyal to the employer, and another one to fight for and promote fairness which cannot be undertaken with one accord.
