Journal Entry-Stereotypes

Growing up, I thought I had learned all about stereotypes and how they negatively affect people; however, one experience during my teenage years taught me that I had more to learn. One summer, I worked at a fast food joint in my neighborhood and made a few friends with other teenagers who worked there. It was a good working environment, and the five of us made a good team, so we eventually decided to start hanging out outside of work. One day, we all decided to go to a carnivore in town. While there, we ran into some of my friends from school, and we all ended up competing against each other in various games at the Carnivore.

One particular game similar to a scavenger hunt was on the list of things we did. This game was a bit complicated, so I picked my coworker Lucy Liu, who is Asian, to compete on our behalf. Unfortunately, we lost, and Lucy was upset with me afterward, which confused me, so I went to talk to her. I remember Lucy asking me angrily why I chose her instead of Jack, another coworker, who was basically a genius at brainy stuff. It was then that I realized that I had used a stereotype that Asian people are smart, and I had unconsciously or consciously used this stereotype on her. I remember feeling ashamed and embarrassed for what I did and not knowing how to apologize. However, Lucy came to me afterward and said that it was good that I saw her in a good light, but it was an overgeneralization of her community that could prove just as harmful as negative stereotypes. Lucy explained that if the situation was changed to something more serious like a job opportunity, other people more capable and deserving of the job would have been disadvantaged because of my stereotype. I completely agreed with her and appreciated that she forgave me and helped me see that I was wrong.

Since I was the perpetrator in this case, I realized that I did not know enough about stereotypes and needed to research and learn more. Accordingly, I took the necessary steps to educate myself and those around me, especially my family, on stereotypes and implicit and explicit biases.
