Job Satisfaction, Conversation Management, and Self-Disclosure

Job Satisfaction, Conversation Management, and Self-Disclosure

Explain one way one can alter their verbal and one way they can alter their nonverbal communication to enhance their job satisfaction at work, using and citing Bevan (Section 6.2). Then, discuss how following these guidelines could help you or some hypothetical worker to be more satisfied.

Nonverbal and verbal communication form an important part of professional and non-professional life. Both of them can be altered to improve an individual’s job satisfaction. According to Bevan (2022), communication language in proficient situations has changed over time to substitute chauvinist and biased forms with more inclusive communication languages. Therefore, one way to alter verbal communication entails shifting from biased language to embracing a more inclusive language. A more inclusive language should also be formal by ensuring it stays away from idioms and slang, making it different from the one used with friends or at home. Bevan (2020) insists on the qualities and nature of formal language by asserting that formal language should be the appropriate and standard form of communication in professional, academic, and business settings. Thus, while altering verbal communication by using non-biased language, it is vital to consider changing the formal language because it is used in job settings where they wish to acquire job satisfaction.

Regarding nonverbal communication, the alteration can be made by using correct grammar and conducting spell-checks for all documents before they are shared with other employees and co-workers. Notably, this alteration can be successful by ensuring you have a good background in communication. Further, enhancing the correctness of the communication being made through nonverbal communication makes the communication language more professional (Mata et al., 2021). As already mentioned, formal communication should be the standard to derive job satisfaction. The two alterations can help me be more satisfied at work in two ways. First, altering nonverbal communication ensures messages are clearer to read and understand, making it easier to follow instructions correctly. Second, when adjusting nonverbal communication ensures correct nonverbal cues such as body language match verbal communication. Confusions that leave workers dissatisfied are likely to occur when the two fail to match.

2)  In section 7.2, Bevan discusses many elements of conversation management. Here, you will address establishing rapport specifically by doing the following:

Explain what rapport is and why it matters, utilizing Bevan.

Bevan (2020) defines rapport as the communication between individuals that entails connection, good communication, and understanding. Communication that has rapport involves interactions that are harmonious and smooth between the communicating parties. Rapport matters greatly in communication because it forms the basis for understanding each other. When a good rapport exists between two individuals, they grow and desire to work together. At my level, when there is a good rapport between me and someone else, I would desire to prolong the conversation or spend more time with the person while handling various aspects that concern us. A good rapport matters in the workplace because it helps ensure smooth interactions between supervisors and their juniors.

Define and describe one of the first three principles of building rapport, from Bevan – confidence, creativity, or caring.

The caring value of creating rapport is selected. According to Bevan (2020), caring entails paying attention to another person, listening to the person, and asking appropriate questions about personal issues. Caring is an essential principle for me because it ensures that rapport is created in a way that shows kindness and care toward the other person. Without care, the rapport being built may fail to be genuine because one may find it difficult to completely show total attention or be kind to the other person. As a result, rapport may be compromised. Additionally, when rapport is based on the caring principle, the communication becomes more exciting and thoughtful because the communicating parties engage in the discussion entirely.

Share an example to illustrate how one principle can enhance a personal or professional relationship.

An example that illustrates how the creative principle of building rapport can be used to improve professional or personal relations is through having a sense of humor. Humor warms conversations and makes them more interesting. Essentially, adopting humor as an example is based on my personal experience. I like discussions that contain a sense of humor because I am more receptive and open to them. As a result, I would encourage individuals to embrace a sense of humor in conversations by being funny or cracking jokes about various subjects that interest the other person.

3) Self-disclosure is an essential part of relationship-building and maintenance and is also important for self-awareness and mental health. To demonstrate an understanding of this topic, please do the following:

Bevan (2020) defines self-disclosure as the deed by individuals to share their personal or reserved life elements with others. The information shared in such conversations would not entail things such as the name but private things that the individual can only disclose. Thus, self-disclosure can be seen to be an intentional act.

Self-disclosure bears various rewards to an individual. One of the rewards would be building and maintaining meaningful relationships (Bevan, 2020). According to Bol et al. (2018), understanding, identifying, and then verbalizing ideas, experiences, and beliefs are all processes that enable individuals to explore and analyze themselves better. As a result, they reinforce or question their self-concepts. Notably, this anchor on building and maintaining meaningful relationships with others. Another reward that can be drawn from self-disclosure is a better understanding of oneself. Self-disclosure equips individuals with the ability to learn who they are, unlocking their inner strength and achievement. Self-disclosure allows individuals to mirror the place they have risen from alongside the hurdles they have encountered in the process. As a result, they realize how strong they have been, which is vital for their mental and physical health.

Different risks can result from the act of self-disclosure. One such risk entails negative criticism. While self-disclosing, people get to know personal information regarding your life upon which they judge you. They end up putting you down or criticizing you for who you are. As a result, they end up destroying your image as a person by sharing the information on how bad or even what kind of a failure you are based on the information they got on the self-disclosure. Another risk of self-disclosure is vulnerability. The information acquired in self-disclosure can be used to judge or even subject you to rejection (Luo & Hancock, 2020). When friends and people around you reject you, you will face tough times and mental distress. Thus, individuals should remain strong after self-disclosing to avoid crumbling to the adverse effects of self-disclosure.
