Interview Assignment-Gender Roles in Relation to Family and Work Life

For my interview about gender roles in relation to family and work life, I had two interviewees, namely Jorge Gonzalez and Mabel Clark. My first interviewee was Mabel Clark, who works as a nurse at San Francisco General Hospital. She has worked as a nurse in the said hospital for the last ten years after transferring from another hospital in Los Angeles. Mabel said that she chose nursing as her career because she always wanted to help treat people who got sick. He initial goal was to become a doctor, but unfortunately, she could not get into medical school, so instead of giving up entirely, she chose to be a nurse. When I asked her whether it was easier for men to become nurses than it is for women, She affirmed no. In fact, she said that women have always had an easier time becoming nurses than men because it has been viewed as fitting for women. Do you need urgent assignment help ? Reach out to us. Mabel gave an affirmative response when I questioned her about any pressure she could have experienced to work as a nurse just because she was a woman. She claimed that a lot of stereotyping prevailed in those days, and women were encouraged to choose careers in nursing and teaching that were seen as more appropriate for them. Mabel also mentioned that when she wanted to become a doctor, she would receive criticism from people who suggested she become a nurse. Mabel also added that all these factors played a role in her not getting into medical school.

On her role at home regarding parenting and household duties, Mabel said that as a single parent, she has an active role in undertaking household duties like making dinner, preparing breakfast, and doing laundry. However, as her three children are all older than fifteen, they each share in the household chores, so she isn’t solely responsible for them.

On the question of whether it is easier for men or women to balance their family roles and their work responsibilities, Mabel said that it was not easy. Accordingly, Mabel said that it took her a while before she found a balance between the two aspects of her life. Unfortunately, she says that sometimes not all things work out, and if one is not careful enough, some things can become neglected, which was the main reason her marriage to the father of her children fell apart.

My second interviewee, Jorge Gonzalez, owns a construction company in Los Angeles. Jorge said that he did not particularly choose his career path. He said that he went on with it after realizing he liked fixing and building houses. His father was an immigrant who worked odd jobs on construction sites, and when he finished high school, Jorge started tagging along so he could make some money to pay for his college tuition. Eventually, Jorge ventured into construction and started his own company. Based on his experience, it is very easy for men to get into construction compared to women. As he stated, the main reason for this is the amount of physical labor required, including operating heavy machinery and tools.

On the question about societal pressure to find a job that fit his gender role, Jorge said that as a child of an immigrant, all that mattered in his family was that he became successful. The career he would choose was not much discussed as his family was still financially struggling, and getting into college was all they wanted for him. However, when he chose building and construction management as his career, Jorge said his father was proud. In his role at home regarding parenting household duties, Jorge says that his stay-at-home wife takes up most of the work because he is mostly in the office eight hours a day, six days a week. To help out at home, Jorge’s wife suggested that they hire a house manager to help her out around the house; this way, everything does not fall on her. In addition, he does play a small part, for example, dropping off their children at school every morning and also attending their events, including soccer games. Based on his experience, Jorge said balancing work and family roles was challenging, especially because he is the boss; hence, everyone depended on him, and at home, as the husband, father, and provider, a lot is expected from him as well. He thinks that the case applies to both genders and that if his wife was working as well, she would face the same challenges.

Comparison of the Interviews to Research from the Textbook

According to the role theory, girls and boys learn and adopt attitudes and behaviors from the culture they grow up in. This culture includes their immediate family, parents, community, and pop culture as well. As such, any gender roles one ends up carrying out result from the community one grew up in, which then shapes one’s identity. I  believe that this is highly accurate; the culture we grow up in plays a huge role in the gender roles that we take on. Further, due to gender stereotypes that shape gender roles, research shows that they reduce achievement aspiration, positive self-images, and professional performance in women (Eisend, 2019), Mabel serving as the perfect example.

Further, my research showed that women are considered to be more nurturing than men because they have more compassion and empathy. This research (Georgieva & Miloshev, 2020; Greenberg & Baron-Cohen, 2020) also revealed that, in contrast to how men are raised, women are nurturing because it is how they were raised. As a result, both of my respondents’ upbringings had a significant impact on the roles and responsibilities they play in their families.
