Interview Summary

I interviewed Mr. Patrick, the nursing officer in charge of my local hospital. We discussed many issues and problems affecting the quality of health services that they were delivering in their facility and the interdisciplinary actions that the hospital was taking to address the issue. Mr.Patrick highlighted the problems the hospital has been experiencing for a while now. As the nursing officer in charge, he is responsible for overseeing nursing services which involves supervising all nursing staff and ensuring proper medication management. The hospital’s main issue of concern was the accessibility and quality of the health services that they were offering. However, he noted that the hospital’s top management was tirelessly working to ensure that the services provided were uniform and of the highest possible quality.

There was an ongoing collaboration between the nursing practitioners and other health departments, such as radiology and microbiology, to ensure that equality is achieved and everyone can access quality healthcare. They are working to bring in as many departments as possible to develop and implement healthcare policies. A task force team has been formed, and it includes nursing officers, health informaticists, physicians, and pharmacists who will be tasked with coordinating and ensuring improved access to healthcare.

Issue Identification

The disparities in access to healthcare raised by Mr.Patrick may need an evidence-based-interdisciplinary approach. Disparities in healthcare can be defined as certain individuals having more disease burden and higher mortality and morbidity rates than other individuals (Ownby et al., 2019). These differences can be due to certain factors and may need clinical research and evidence-based interventions to address this issue. An interdisciplinary approach may also be employed since disparities have always been an issue, and previous interventions were put in place before (Ownby et al., 2019). Hence it is essential to evaluate the previous intervention to see gaps and arrears of improvements. These healthcare access disparities can be an obstacle to achieving quality care since one section of the population will be lagging.

Change Theories That Could Lead to an Interdisciplinary Solution

Change is crucial in any organization since it allows for the growth of the organization. The theory of evolution provides a conceptual framework on how change can be effected in an organization. There has to be a group of people for change and others against the change in every organization. For the change to occur, the proponents must dominate the opponents. The change theory can create an interdisciplinary solution by incorporating both teams’ views on how change can be effected (Qu et al., 2017). The proposals can be collected from all the necessary players, and these suggestions can be useful in coming up with a solution. Lewin’s theory of change can also be relevant in solving the health disparity issue since it mainly involves different team players’ views (Burnes & Bargal, 2017). Thus, the opposing force must first be dominated before coming up with a reasonable solution to the problem. Leadership Strategies That Could Lead to an Interdisciplinary Solution

Leadership is critical for the development of any viable solution. The leadership strategy adopted should be in line with the solution. Continuous education is a crucial strategy that the team is subjected to, and this ensures that they grow intellectually hence useful in adopting the solution. Quality healthcare delivery requires constant education since new methods keep getting invented (.Price & Reichert, 2017). This leadership strategy can be useful since it will unite all team players and educate them to develop innovative solutions to help solve health discrepancies. Delegation can also be useful since it will empower the team players and boost their confidence, enabling them to develop goal-oriented solutions. These strategies are relevant in interdisciplinary solutions since they enable the team leaders to work with their team members to develop solutions. Collaboration Approaches for Interdisciplinary Teams

The nursing department headed by Mr.Patrick has collaborated with other hospital departments to solve health disparities. This has been useful in developing and implementing solutions to ensure equal access to healthcare services. The success of the collaboration is dependent on the type of leadership approach taken. One of the approaches that can be taken is transformational leadership, where the leader works with the team members by encouraging, inspiring, and motivating them to come up with solutions (Galli, (2019). Disparities in healthcare can be associated with social class and ethnic differences. When the team leader appeals to their junior officers, the team feels respected and appreciated, and hence an interdisciplinary solution can be developed and implemented.

Collaboration can be defined as working together with different individuals to achieve a common goal. Thus transformational leadership can effectively bring people with different thoughts together. As a baccalaureate-prepared nurse, your participation and leadership in interdisciplinary teams will be vital to the health outcomes of your patients and organization. One way to approach designing an improvement project is to use the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement describes it thus:

The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle is shorthand for testing a change in the real work setting—by planning
it, trying it, observing the results, and acting on what is learned. This is the scientific method adapted for action-oriented learning…Essentially, the PDSA cycle helps you test out change ideas on a smaller scale before evaluating the results and making adjustments before potentially launching into a somewhat larger-scale project (n.d.).

You might also recognize that the PDSA cycle resembles the nursing process. The benefit of gaining experience with this model of project design is that it provides nurses with an opportunity to ideate and lead improvements. For this assessment, you will not be implementing the entire PDSA cycle. Instead, you are being asked to interview a healthcare professional of your choice to determine what kind of interdisciplinary problem he or she is experiencing or has experienced in the workplace. This interview, in Assessment 2, will inform the research that you will conduct to propose a plan for interdisciplinary collaboration in Assessment 3.

It would be an excellent choice to complete the PDSA Cycle activity prior to developing the report. The activity

This assessment will introduce the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) Model to create change in an organization. By interviewing a colleague of your choice, you will begin gathering information about an interprofessional collaboration problem that your colleague is experiencing or has experienced. You will identify a change theory and leadership strategies to help solve this problem.

Scenario

This assessment is the first of three related assessments in which you will gather interview information (Assessment 2), design a proposal for interdisciplinary problem-solving (Assessment 3), and report on how an interdisciplinary improvement plan could be implemented in a place of practice (Assessment 4). At the end of the course, your interviewee will have a proposal plan based on the PDSA cycle that he or she could present to stakeholders to address an interdisciplinary problem in the workplace.

For this assessment, you will need to interview a healthcare professional such as a fellow learner, nursing colleague, administrator, business partner, or another appropriate person who could provide you with sufficient information regarding an organizational problem that he or she is experiencing or has experienced, or an area where they are seeking improvements. This could be an issue that has not been addressed by an interdisciplinary approach or one that could benefit from improvements related to the interdisciplinary approach currently being used. You will discuss the interview strategy that you used to collect information. Your interview strategy should be supported by citations from the literature. Additionally, you will start laying the foundation for your Interdisciplinary Plan Proposal (Assessment 3) by researching potential change theories, leadership strategies, and collaboration approaches that could be relevant to the issue you have identified. Please be certain to review the scoring guide to confirm specific required elements of this assessment. Note that there are differences between basic, proficient, and distinguished scores.
