Internet of Things Application in an Organization

Daimler, a German manufacturer of vehicles, has incorporated the Internet of Things technology in its vehicles. The innovation is expected to provide driving assistance to drivers, reduce their fatigue, and improve safety on the roads. The implemented IoT technologies include proximity control, emergency brake assist, lane-keeping assist, stop-and-go assist, and 3-D maps (Schimek, 2019). These technological features enable the vehicle to retain a safe distance from other vehicles and brake automatically if a situation requires so.

The adoption of this technology has improved the fitness of the driver. Assistance from technology reduces their sleepiness by at least 25 percent. This means that if the driver was likely to engage in other activities while driving, they can now do so safely as the assist technology manages the vehicle. Besides safety, the technology is also expected to increase fuel efficiency through communication with other road users and infrastructure, reduce the flow of traffic, and enhance fuel economy (Schimek, 2019).

Furthermore, Daimler’s trucks are likely to break down less with the incorporation of sensors and software that detects abnormalities and alerts the driver or maintenance team of the need for repairs. In specific cases, the driver is directed to local technicians who can sort the issue as the dealer is alerted when the truck arrives, which leads to retrieval of its diagnostic data. This predictive maintenance will potentially reduce the wastage of time and loss of resources that occur with the unprecedented breakdown of vehicles. The efficiency is spread through the roads to the financial elements of a company that uses Daimler automated trucks (Boulton, 2014).

The innovation is made possible through the installation of cameras and sensors in vehicles. Stereo cameras, as well as radar sensors, are expected to improve the accuracy as well as response times. Furthermore, software installation to enhance the process of communication is also utilized.
