Integrating Assessments- Enhancing Communication Skills for Present and Future Goals
The Soft Skill Conflict Style Assessment helped me identify my strengths and improvement areas. The main areas for improvement include my listening and conflict-resolution skills. I need to learn how to listen before responding to communicate with other people effectively and engage in meaningful conversations. I also need to learn how to effectively handle conflicts to improve how I relate with the people around me. Developing conflict resolution skills is linked to developing listening capabilities because conflict resolution involves listening to the other party’s needs and concerns and sharing my opinion on how I feel about them. Therefore, I can access my conflict resolution capabilities based on whether I can listen to the other party or parties in the conflict before responding.
One of the measures I will use to develop the ability to listen before responding is engaging in discussions with friends and colleagues. Engaging in the discussions will help me learn how to control my urge to speak before listening, thus enhancing my ability to listen before responding. I will also develop the ability to listen before responding by learning to control my emotions. According to Abrahams & Groysberg (2021), monitoring emotions is vital in developing active listening and engaging in a conversation without interrupting the other party before they finish talking. I will focus on identifying topics that evoke negative emotions for me and how I can avoid them or respond appropriately when the topics emerge during a conversation.
I will also develop my conflict resolution skills by learning different conflict resolution strategies and the most suitable strategies in different situations. I will review various research articles about conflict resolution to understand the application of conflict management styles in different contexts and what I should consider when selecting a conflict resolution strategy. I will also develop my conflict resolution skills by improving my communication skills. Jones (2018) states that information exchange is vital in conflict resolution. Therefore, I need to learn how to share information with others effectively and listen to their opinion.
My main motivation for developing conflict resolution and active listening skills is because they are vital in my professional life. Conflict resolution will help me effectively address conflicts between me and colleagues and clients. I can also use conflict resolution strategies to promote collaboration by addressing conflicts among the team members. On the other hand, active listening skills will help me create professional networks by engaging in conversations and debates with people within my career, leading to professional growth and access to better opportunities.
